The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 16553.93 up 185.66 or 1.13% from Thursday's close of 16368.27. For the week the Dow is up 60.56 or 0.37 from last Friday's close of 16493.37. Of the Dow components 28 gained and 2 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs up $3.16 and percentage-wise was Home Depot up 2.44%.The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Intel down 8 cents or 0.24%.
As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.61 up from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.60 (last year it was 16.92). 8/8/14 Fri. 4:09 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova, Carla Mozee & Victor Reklaitis says Wall Street closed sharply higher Friday and posted modest gains for the week as risk appetite returned after news reports that Russia ended military exercises on the Ukrainian border.
The S&P 500SPX +1.15% closed 22.02 points, or 1.2%, to 1,931.59 and finished the week 0.3% higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +1.13% jumped 185.66 points, or 1.1%, to 16,553.93, its biggest one-day percentage gain in more than 4 months. The blue-chip index gained 0.3% over the week.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.83% gained 36.08 points, or 0.8%, to 4,371.07 and recorded a 0.4% weekly gain.
The Russell 2000RUT +1.04% rose 11.8 points, or 1% to the preliminary 1,131.55 and gained 1.5% over the past five days, outperforming large-cap stocks.
Headlines from Russia and the Middle East dominated news on Friday. Russian news agency RIA quoted a senior official saying Russia is seeking to de-escalate tensions with Ukraine, followed by another report that it ended military exercises near the border with Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the U.S. military has struck ISIL artillery that had been used against Kurdish forces defending Erbil, the Pentagon said Friday.
“Equities are likely to trade sideways throughout August and be driven by geopolitical headline news,” said Terry Sandven, chief equity strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management. “From a technical standpoint, it is a good time to add to positions as we do not expect a 10% correction at this point.”
President Obama authorizes airstrikes against Islamist militants in Iraq, saying the U.S. can’t ignore potential genocide.
In the Middle East, Israel said Hamas had violated a 72-hour cease-fire and ordered the military to resume fire in the Gaza Strip. On the data front, a report on U.S. labor productivity in the second quarter showed a 2.5% rise, beating the 1.7% gain expected by economists polled by MarketWatch.
Among individual stocks, Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corp.TKMR -0.19% CA:TKM +47.34% surged 45% after the Canadian drug maker said Thursday U.S. regulators are moving closer to approving its anti-Ebola drug for use on those infected with the deadly disease.
Gap GPS +5.90% climbed 5.9% after the apparel retailer’s same-store sales increased 2% in July, topping analysts’ expectations.’
Sotheby’s BID -7.86% dropped 7.9% after the auction-house’s second-quarter profit dropped 15%, missing Wall Street’s expectations.
In other markets, oil futures /CLU4 +0.01% ticked up, and gold futures GCZ4 -0.15% firmed. The 10-year U.S. Treasury note’s yield recovered to 2.42% after Russia news. European stocks XX:SXXP -0.63% closed lower.
Investors had sought safety in the Japanese yen USDJPY -0.04% , and that push higher for the currency led to a 3% dive in Japanese stocks JP:NIK -2.98% .

8/7/14 Thurs. 4:36 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Barbara Kollmeyer says The U.S. stock market ended Thursday’s session with modest losses, as investors moved out of riskier assets and into gold and U.S. Treasurys.
The drop in stocks, while relatively modest, was global, with Asian and European markets also losing ground.
Key benchmarks hit the day’s lows late in the session. The S&P 500 SPX -0.56% fell 10.67 points, or 0.6%, to 1,909.57. The benchmark index is now 3.9% off its July 24 record closed, after falling in 4 of the past 6 trading days.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.46% fell 75.07 points, or 0.5%, to 16,368.27, its lowest close since April 25. The blue-chip index is 4.5% off its July 16 record close after falling in 9 of the past 12 trading days.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.46% fell 20.08 points, or 0.5%, at 4,334.97.

In economic news, the number of people who applied for unemployment benefits fell below 300,000 for the second time in three weeks, solidifying a picture of an improving U.S. labor market. Better-than-expected data briefly pushed stocks higher, but gains soon dissipated. Instead, investors pushed up prices of Treasurys and gold. The yield on a 10-year Treasury note, which falls when prices rise, fell to the lowest level in more than a year, at 2.42%, while gold settled above $1,300 for the second session in a row.
The S&P 500 is now down 3.9% from its peak, hit by fears that the stronger economy could push the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates sooner than expected as well as escalating tensions surrounding Ukraine. On Thursday, Russia banned food imports from the U.S., members of the European Union and other countries in retaliation over sanctions.
“This market got complacent and ahead of itself a few weeks ago, was overbought on technical levels. So the selloff last week was not surprising,” said Paul Zemsky, chief investment officer of multi-asset strategies at Voya Investment Management. “There is nothing in our indicators that signals a larger 10%-15% correction. However, we think the S&P 500 will fall to 1,900 before continuing to march higher.”
Netflix Inc. NFLX +0.16% shares rallied 4.5% after Chief Executive Reed Hastings. in a Facebook post, said Netflix’s subscriber revenue totaled $1.146 billion last quarter, edging out HBO’s $1.141 billion.
