8/25/14 Mon. pm Dow Closes at 17076.87 up 75.65 or 0.44%

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/
by Dan Kolber

Post No. 2,802 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Monday at 17076.87 up 75.65 or 0.44%  from Friday's close of 17001.22. Of the Dow components  24 gained and  6 declined.  The biggest gainer   dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs up $2.40  and percentage-wise was  JPMorgan up 1.45%.  The biggest decliner   dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Intel down 13 cents or 0.37%.

As of the open of  the market on  Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of  Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.15 up from Friday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.09  (last year it was 15.66).  Monday's P/E estimate is 15.05 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 14.77 (year ago it was 13.53) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.19 down  from  Friday's dividend yield of 2.23  (last year it was 2.47). The Dow's all-time high was 17113.54 on July 2,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2659.14 up 11.78 down 5.96   from  Friday's   numerator of 2647.36.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.25 down 19 cents from Friday's  average closing price of $88.25.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.92  (UNH/AXP) up 59 cents from Friday's median closing price of $86.33 (UNH/AXP). The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was GE.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,178  ($265,914 - $264,736 ).

8/25/14 Mon. 4:44 MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis & Barbara Kollmeyer says U.S. stocks
S&P 500 on Monday climbed to a record close just shy of 2,000, as U.S. stocks received a lift from deal activity and hints of more stimulus from the European Central Bank. Shares of Burger King Worldwide Inc., Tim Hortons Inc. and InterMune Inc. surged on merger news, while July new-home sales came in slightly below expectations, but the government upwardly revised the June result.

The S&P 500 SPX, +0.48%  gained 9.52 points, or 0.5%, to end at 1,997.92 after notching an intraday record at 2,001.95. While the benchmark finished under the milestone level of 2,000, it still achieved an all-time closing high for the 29th time this year.
All 10 sectors advanced, with financials XLF, +0.87%  and energy XLE, +0.89% performing best.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.44% climbed 75.65 points, or 0.4%, to end at 17,076.87, while the Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.41%  jumped by 18.80 points, or 0.4%, to finish at 4,557.35. The Dow stands 0.4% off its July 16 record close, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq again scored its highest close since March 31, 2000.
S&P 500 tops 2000: “It’s an encouraging thing,” said Sam Stovall, equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ, referring to the benchmark moving above 2,000 intraday. The index hasn’t cleared a “millennial number” since 1998, when it topped 1,000, he added. Stovall said that he doesn’t think valuations are stretched, and sides more with Jeremy Siegel’s camp rather than Robert Shiller’s — two well-known market watchers with diverging views. In addition, Stovall sounded a cautious note about anemic summertime trading. “The volume is incredibly low,” he told MarketWatch. That’s “a sign of maybe lack of conviction, but I think at the same time it doesn’t necessarily mean things have to go bad.” Total composite volume was at its lowest level of the year for any full trading day.
Draghi ‘whatever it takes’ part 2: Inspiration for Monday’s gains came in part from stronger European markets, where the Stoxx Europe 600 SXXP, +1.10%  closed higher following ECB President Mario Draghi’s suggestion that further stimulus could be on the way for Europe.
“[Draghi] was dovish and, to a certain degree, while Yellen and the rest of the Fed members are preparing for a rate hike next year, the tone is still that of easy money and so if you have a flow of easy money coming out of Europe, that is going to help equity markets here in the States as well,” said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital. Draghi’s comments, which came Friday after European markets had closed, and a speech by Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen were initially brushed aside by Wall Street last week.Another Merger Monday: Burger King Worldwide Inc. BKW, +19.51%  shares closed 19.5% higher following news the hamburger chain is in talks to buy Canadian coffee-and-doughnut chain Tim Hortons Inc. THI, +18.91% The deal would be set up as a so-called tax inversion, moving Burger King’s tax base to Canada. U.S.-listed shares of Tim Hortons rose 18.9%.Shares of InterMune Inc. ITMN, +35.41%  soared 35.4% after Switzerland-based Roche Holding AG RHHBY, +0.69% RO, +0.77% ROG, +0.68%  said Sunday it will pay $8.3 billion for the California biotech firm.Shares of Ann Inc. ANN, +6.45%  finished up 6.5% after activist investor Engine Capital LP called on the parent of clothing retailer Ann Taylor to sell itself.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Friday at 17001.22 down 38.27 or 38.27%  from Thursday's close of 17039.49.  For the week the Dow was up 338.31 or 2.03% from last Friday's close of 16662.91. IBD pB8 "Stocks end week on calm note, but breakouts keep appearing" by Paul Whitfield says stocks ended mixed in lower vol as the market greeted Janet Yellen's speech with a yawn.  The current outlook is  a confirmed uptrend.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2647.36 down 5.96   from  Thursday's   numerator of 2653.32.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.25 down 19 cents from Thursday's  average closing price of $88.44.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.33  (UNH/AXP) down 13 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $86.46 (UNH/AXP). The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was GE.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $596  ($265,332 - $264,736 ).

8/22/14 Fri. 4:36 MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis & Carla Mozee says U.S. stocks
closed mostly lower on Friday in the slowest trading day so far this year, with the S&P 500 pulling back from Thursday’s record close. Investors appeared to shrug at speeches by Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen and European Central Bank President Mario Draghi. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.20% slipped by 3.97 points, or 0.2%, to finish at 1,988.40, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.22% shed 38.27 points, or 0.2%, to end at 17,001.22, as each index snapped a four-day winning streak. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.14% bucked the negative trend, tacking on 6.45 points, or 0.1%, to close at 4,538.55.Stocks traded roughly flat after Yellen’s speech, then slumped to session lows after fresh Ukraine-Russia reports before paring losses. The reports said NATO viewed a buildup of Russian forces near Ukraine as alarming, and the organization condemned the entry of a Russian convoy into Ukraine.Careful comments in Jackson Hole: Yellen, at her speech at the annual gathering of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyo., said the economy is getting closer to the Fed’s goals of full employment and stable inflation, and the debate at the central bank is “naturally shifting” to when to raise interest rates. Balancing this more hawkish tone, Yellen said the unemployment rate’s decline overstates the improvement in overall labor market conditions.
“I think the most important takeaway is that as one of the most dovish members of the board, she’s clearly much less dovish than she was,” Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank, told MarketWatch. He said Yellen is now making “more an argument for patience rather than dovishness.”Draghi said the European Central Bank stands ready to take more unconventional action if needed, but it can’t solve the euro zone’s unemployment problem all by itself.Weekly performance: The three main indexes all achieved their third weekly gain in a row. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both advanced by 1.7% for the week, while the Dow rose 2%.“A number of economic indicators came in fairly positive, and I think that supported the market’s uptrend this week,” said Carin Pai, an equity strategist at wealth manager Fiduciary Trust. She said the data included better-than-expected figures for housing starts and jobless claims, and come amid a mostly strong second-quarter earnings season that also has supported the market’s three-week advance.
Tensions between Ukraine and Russia as well as in the Middle East are causes for short-term volatility, but the resulting market dips are “buying opportunities for money that has been sitting on the sidelines,” she said. While the geopolitical troubles bear watching, they aren’t large enough risks to change her shop’s view on the economy, she said.Low volume, and holidays next week: Composite volumes for the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq dropped to their lowest levels of the year for a full trading day. Next week, holidays could help keep trading volumes at low summertime levels. Monday is a holiday in the U.K., and by the end of next week, many traders in the U.S. may be mostly focused on the Labor Day weekend. Movers and shakers: Keurig Green Mountain Inc. GMCR, +0.03%   surged 13.2% for the best gain in the S&P 500, helped by news of a new licensing deal with Kraft Foods Group Inc. KRFT, -0.07%
Salesforce.com Inc. CRM, +7.34% Ross Stores Inc. ROST, +7.39%  and GameStop Corp. GME, +5.95%  were also big winners in the S&P 500 as investors cheered each company’s quarterly report.
