8/14/14 Thurs. 4:06 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Carla Mozee  says  U.S. stocks ended Thursday modestly higher, as softer-than-expected economic data reinforced speculation that the Federal Reserve won’t rush to raise interest rates.
Investors shrugged off a larger-than-expected jump in jobless claims and mixed earnings from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Kohl’s Corp.
The S&P 500SPX +0.44%  closed up 8.46 points, or 0.4%, at 1,955.18, with health-care stocks leading the gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.37%  gained 61.78 points, or 0.4%, to 16,713.58. The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP +0.43%  rose 18.88 points, or 0.4%, to 4,453.00.
Dow industrials component Wal-Mart /WMT -0.05% lowered its full-year earnings forecast, while second-quarter operating profit met analyst expectations and sales topped those views.
Investors eye Cisco, Kohl's and Noodles & Co. stock Thursday morning.
Department-store operator Kohl’s KSS -0.15%  shares rallied after the company posted slightly improved second-quarter earnings from a year ago, despite a decline in sales. Same-stores sales turned positive in July.
A report from the Labor Department showed initial jobless claims rose more than expected, but remained close to prerecession levels, boding well for the labor market. Analysts said that like most recent economic data, this report was soft enough for the Fed not to rush with rate hikes, but not too soft to raise worries about the economy.
“Investors gave a jobless claims a pass, as the trend seems to be intact,” said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors.
Meanwhile, operators of brick-and-mortar stores are slowly adjusting to a shift in consumer behavior, and, “We see a lot of stocks that are now attractive because of that shift,” he said. He said the firm owns shares in American Eagle Outfitters Inc. AEO -1.55%
After Thursday’s closing bell, embattled retailer J.C. Penney                        JCP +4.62%  is projected to report a narrower second-quarter loss of 91 cents a share.
Nordstrom JWN -3.10%  also will release results after the close, and analysts expect the upscale department store chain to post earnings of 94 cents for its second quarter

The main benchmarks gained in the three of the past four sessions, bouncing off the lows reached last week.
Gains on the Nasdaq Composite were led by biotechnology companies, with the iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETFIBB +0.01%   up 2.2%. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.02%  added 44.87 points, or 1%, to 4,434.13.

Even consumer plays nudged higher, despite softer-than-expected retail sales data as well as disappointing quarterly results from retailers such as Macy’s Inc. and Fossil Group Inc.
Michael Arone, managing director at State Street Global Advisors, said the day’s economic data were positive enough to indicate that consumers are still spending, but not strong enough for the Federal Reserve raise rates sooner than currently anticipated.
Looking more broadly at the markets and the S&P 500’s recent drop of nearly 4% from its peak, Arone said pullbacks historically have tended to be shorter and shallower when price-to-earnings ratios are rising.
“Benign inflation and a stronger dollar mean that the U.S. economy and company earnings will continue to grow. This is a positive environment for the stock markets,” he added.
Sales at U.S. retailers were unchanged in July, the weakest result in six months, as sales fell at auto dealers, but rose at gas stations and food and beverage stores, according to government data released Wednesday. Separately, business inventories rose in June by more than expected.
Amazon.com Inc. AMZN +0.13%  climbed as the company launched a new mobile payment service using a smartphone or tablet that is aimed at a market dominated by privately held Square.
Shares of Macy’s Inc.                         M -5.51%  fell following a disappointing outlook and second-quarter sales that fell short of estimates.
Shares of SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. SEAS +0.11% plunged after the theme-park operator reported second-quarter results fell short and the company cut its full-year sales outlook.

Networking-gear maker Cisco SystemsCSCO +0.91%  will release results after the close of Wednesday’s trading session.
Elsewhere, the yields on the 10-year U.S. Treasurys10_YEAR -1.51%  fell 33 basis points to 2.4% after weaker-than-expected retail sales data reinforced speculation that the Federal Reserve won’t rush to raise rates. Oil futures CLU4 +0.02%  were little changed, while gold futures GCZ4 +0.11%  rose.
Asian markets overnight closed higher, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng HK:HSI +0.81%  climbing 0.8%. In the U.K., the pound GBPUSD -0.72%  dropped sharply against the U.S. dollar as prospects dimmed for an interest-rate hike before the end of the year.
