Post No. 2,785 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 16713.58 up 61.78 or 0.37% from Wednesday's close of 16651.80. For the year the Dow is up 0.83%. Of the Dow components 23 gained, Exxon was unchanged and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Boeing up $2.13 and percentage-wise was Pfizer up 1.84 %. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Cisco down 66 cents or $2.62 %.
WSJ pC4 "Stocks drift higher, continuing recovery" by Saumya Vaishampayan says US stocks rose as the market continued to recover from its recent swoon. Walmart cut its full year earnings guidance and reported its 7th decline in a row in quarterly US store traffic.
NYT pB5 "Market inches higher on corporate earnings" & AJC pA9 "U.S. stocks creep higher" by AP say better corp earnings nudged the market up Thurs in a quiet sessions.
IBD pB3 "Stocks notch small gains, keeping the uptrend alive" by Paul Whitfield says Thursday's action was up in lower vol while the current outlook is confirmed uptrend.
FT p19 "Wall Street" by Eric Platt says US equity markets rose as new figures showed recent jobless claims hovering near pre-crisis levels.
As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.81 up from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.72 (last year it was 16.49). Friday's P/E estimate is 14.51 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 14.51 (year ago it was 13.92) and Friday's dividend yield is 2.36 up from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.24 (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 17113.54 on July 2, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2602.57 up 9.62 from Wednesday's numerator of 2592.95. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.75 up 32 cents from Wednesday's average closing price of $86.43. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.91 (PG/HD) up 59 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $82.32 (UNH/HD/. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Intel.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $962 ($260,257 - $259,295).
8/14/14 Thurs. 4:06 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Carla Mozee says U.S. stocks ended Thursday modestly higher, as softer-than-expected economic data reinforced speculation that the Federal Reserve won’t rush to raise interest rates.
Investors shrugged off a larger-than-expected jump in jobless claims and mixed earnings from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Kohl’s Corp.
The S&P 500SPX +0.44% closed up 8.46 points, or 0.4%, at 1,955.18, with health-care stocks leading the gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.37% gained 61.78 points, or 0.4%, to 16,713.58. The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP +0.43% rose 18.88 points, or 0.4%, to 4,453.00.
Dow industrials component Wal-Mart /WMT -0.05% lowered its full-year earnings forecast, while second-quarter operating profit met analyst expectations and sales topped those views.
Investors eye Cisco, Kohl's and Noodles & Co. stock Thursday morning.
Department-store operator Kohl’s KSS -0.15% shares rallied after the company posted slightly improved second-quarter earnings from a year ago, despite a decline in sales. Same-stores sales turned positive in July. A report from the Labor Department showed initial jobless claims rose more than expected, but remained close to prerecession levels, boding well for the labor market. Analysts said that like most recent economic data, this report was soft enough for the Fed not to rush with rate hikes, but not too soft to raise worries about the economy.
“Investors gave a jobless claims a pass, as the trend seems to be intact,” said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors.
Meanwhile, operators of brick-and-mortar stores are slowly adjusting to a shift in consumer behavior, and, “We see a lot of stocks that are now attractive because of that shift,” he said. He said the firm owns shares in American Eagle Outfitters Inc. AEO -1.55%
After Thursday’s closing bell, embattled retailer J.C. Penney JCP +4.62% is projected to report a narrower second-quarter loss of 91 cents a share.
Nordstrom JWN -3.10% also will release results after the close, and analysts expect the upscale department store chain to post earnings of 94 cents for its second quarter.
