8/18/14 Mon. am Coke's Investment in Monster May Cause Image Problem

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/
by Dan Kolber

Post No. 2,789 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Monday's Barron's, Investor's Business Daily, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Friday at 16662.91 down 50.67 or 0.30%  from Thursday's close of 16713.58. For the week the Dow was up108.98 or 0.65%  from last Friday's close of 16,553.93.  For the year the Dow is up 0.5%. Of the Dow components 7  gained and 23  declined.  The biggest gainer   dollar-wise was and percentage-wise was Coke up 70 cents or 1.74%.  The biggest decliner   dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was  Verizon down $2.33 or 1.10 %.

IBD pB9 "Stocks battle back, erase losses despite news of Ukraine clash" by Paul Whitfield says Friday's action was flat to up in higher vol as the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.  Home Depot reports results on Tues.

As of the open of  the market on  Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of  Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E   ratio is 15.87 up from Friday's   trailing P/E ratio of 15.81  (last year it was 16.46).  Monday's P/E estimate is 14.77 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 14.51 (year ago it was 13.6) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.21 down  from  Friday's dividend yield of 2.36  (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 17113.54 on July 2,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2594.68 down 7.89  from  Thursday's   numerator of 2602.57.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.49 down 26 cents from Thursday's  average closing price of $86.75.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.74  (PG/HD) down 17  cents from Thursday's median closing price of $82.91 (PG/HD/. The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $789  ($260,257 - $259,468).

8/15/14 Fri. 4:08 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Carla Mozee  says stocks ended mixed Friday, trimming or erasing losses after falling on news of a clash between Ukrainian and Russian military units on Ukraine soil. Major indexes posted weekly gains despite the late flight out of riskier assets into Treasurys.

The S&P 500 SPX -0.01%  fell 0.12 point, or less than 0.1%, to end at 1,955.06 after trading as low as 1,941.40, leaving the index with a 1.2% weekly gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.30%  trimmed a triple-digit loss to end the day down 50.67 points, or 0.3%, at 16,662.91, making for a weekly rise of 0.7%. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.27%  returned to positive territory, rising 11.93 points, or 0.3%, to 4,464.93 and notching a 2.2% weekly advance.

Ukrainian forces destroyed part of a Russian military unit that was on Ukrainian soil, a Ukrainian military spokesperson said Friday, according to news reports. Separately, NATO’s secretary-general said the alliance observed a Russian “incursion” into Ukraine, denied by Russia, on Thursday night, according to the Associated Press.

“Markets are reacting this afternoon to the ongoing developments, but in the fog of war it makes little difference what the specific elements are in each event. Instead, what drives market valuations is the knowledge of applied costs. No matter how Ukraine, Russia, and the separatists sort themselves out, the costs continue to rise,” said David Kotok, chief investment officer at Cumberland Advisors, in a note.

The 10-year Treasury note yield 10_YEAR -2.54% fell more than 5 basis points to less than 2.35% as investors sought safety by buying Treasurys. Yields fall as Treasury prices decline.

Haven-related buying only provided a modicum of help for gold, however, which trimmed losses but still settled at its lowest level since Aug. 5. Friday’s losses on the main benchmarks put a cap on weekly gains. Stocks trimmed initial losses ahead of the closing bell.

John De Clue, chief investment officer at the Private Client Reserve of U.S. Bank, said he isn’t surprised that stocks have been so resilient in the face of geopolitical concerns.

“Second-quarter earnings have been better than many of us expected and the economy is growing. The fact that we are not seeing larger pullbacks mean that investors are not alarmed by the impact of geopolitical issues,” he said.

Still, the entanglement overshadowed more signs that the U.S. economy remains healthy and that company profits are increasing. Industrial production rose in July, thanks to a sizable jump in car output, the Federal Reserve said Friday.

Meanwhile, U.S. producer prices inched up in July, a second consecutive month of gains, led by services such as transportation and warehousing, the government reported Friday. That is one of several recent inflation gauges that show price growth isn’t running too hot for the Fed.

Investors shrugged off a preliminary August reading on the University of Michigan/Thomson Reuters consumer-sentiment index that showed it at the lowest level since November.
Emilio Lozoya, CEO of Mexico's state-owned oil company PetrĂ³leos Mexicanos, talks about the Mexican government's plan to open some of the country's oil fields to private companies.

Monster Beverage MNST +0.01%  shares surged to lead the S&P on Coca-Cola’s KO +1.74%  move to acquire a 17% ownership stake in the energy drink company, as part of a long-term partnership deal. Coke will make a $2.15 billion cash payment and transfer its global energy drink business to Monster.

Applied Materials Inc. AMAT -0.04%  was among the biggest advancers in the S&P, after the chip-making equipment provider’s quarterly sales and earnings report topped Wall Street expectations.

Achillion Pharmaceuticals ACHN +9.60%  rallied in heavy volume following positive results from a clinical trial related to sovaprevir, the company’s experimental hepatitis C treatment.

Autodesk Inc. ADSK +0.08%   shares led S&P losses after the design-software company late Thursday forecast a tepid outlook. Read more about the day’s notable movers here.

In Asia, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index HK:HSI +0.62%  finished at its highest level in more than three years. European stocks XX:SXXP -0.40%  ended lower after headlines of conflict escalation in Ukraine.
