by Dan Kolber
Post No. 2,793 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 16919.59 up 80.85 or 0.48% from Monday's close of 16838.74. For the year the Dow is up 2.1%. Of the Dow components 22 gained and 8 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was and percentage-wise was Home Depot up $4.64 or 5.55%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs down 59 cents and percentage-wise was AT&T down 0.49%.
As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.96 up from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.82 (last year it was 16.33). Wednesday's P/E estimate is 14.77 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 14.77 (year ago it was 13.66) and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.20 down from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.22 (last year it was 2.47). The Dow's all-time high was 17113.54 on July 2, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2634.65 up 12.60 from Monday's numerator of 2622.05. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87.82 up 42 cents from Monday's average closing price of $87.40. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.80 (UNH/AXP) up $2.79 from Monday's median closing price of $83.01 (PG/HD/. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Intel.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,260 ($263,346 - $262,205).
8/19/14 Tues. 4:06 MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis & Wallace Witkowski says
U.S. stocks climbed Tuesday after a better-than-expected jump in July housing starts and upbeat earnings reports. Apple Inc. AAPL, -0.04% achieved an all-time split-adjusted closing high, while Home Depot Inc. HD, +5.55% was the biggest gainer in the Dow Jones Industrial Average in the wake of quarterly results that topped forecasts. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.50% advanced 9.86 points, or 0.5%, to close at 1,981.60, while the Dow industrials DJIA, +0.48% rose 80.85 points, or 0.5%, to end at 16,919.59. The S&P 500 stands 0.3% off its July 24 record close at 1,987.98, recovering from its drop in late July and early August. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.43% advanced 19.20 points, or 0.4%, to finish at 4,527.51. The tech-laden index scored its highest close since March 31, 2000, for the second day in a row, and it’s on a five-day winning streak. The Commerce Department on Tuesday said construction on U.S. new homes rose 15.7% in July to an annual rate of 1.09 million, well above forecasts, and the June drop in new construction was revised to a much smaller decline.
“I think investors will be encouraged to an extent by the revisions in the data,” said Andrew Wilkinson, chief market analyst at Interactive Brokers. He also said geopolitical concerns seem to be receding, even though there’s no resolution in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, and that “just gives added impetus to the bulls.” In other economic news, the Labor Department said U.S. consumer prices rose 0.1% in July, matching forecasts and signaling inflation isn’t flaring up.
When Google went public 10 years ago, co-founder Larry Page said he wanted to get his search engine’s users “out of Google and to the right place as fast as possible." Today, Google is often doing the opposite. The rest of the week “is going to be about the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) minutes and Jackson Hole conference,” said Wouter Sturkenboom, strategist at Russell Investments in London, in emailed comments. “On both counts, we and the market expect the prevailing dovish stance to hold, providing upside momentum for markets,” Sturkenboom said. But he added that owing to valuation concerns, his firm remains neutral on U.S. stocks. The FOMC minutes will hit Wednesday, and Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen will speak on Friday at the central bank’s conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Stocks have rallied in recent sessions mostly because investors are no longer frightened about rising interest rates, said Bruce Bittles, chief investment strategist at R.W. Baird. Some soft economic news in the U.S. and overseas, such as for jobless claims and retail sales, indicate the low-rate regime that’s boosted stocks will continue.
“All of a sudden, the theory that we were in a rising interest rate environment in the U.S. turned out to be perhaps premature,” Bittles told MarketWatch. He argued that while geopolitical fears have spiked and then eased, they’re largely background noise.Movers & shakers: Home Depot shares rose 5.6% to a record close, and home-builder shares staged a rally with D.R Horton Inc. DHI, +3.27% Ryland Group Inc. RYL, +4.62% and Lennar Corp. LEN, +3.33% shares all advancing at least 3%.
