Post No. 2,771 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USAT Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 16429.47 down 139.81 or 0.84% from Monday's close of 16569.28. For the year the Dow is down 0.9%. Of the Dow components 2 gained, Home Depot was unchanged and declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing up $1.34 or 1.12%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Chevron down $3.12 and percentage-wise was Intel down 2.97%.
WSJ pC1 "Blue chips accelerate summer swoon" by Saumya Vaishampayan says Geopolitical jittters sent the Dow to its 8th decline in 10 trading days.
AJC pA11 "Ukraine news chills investors" by AP says Russian/Ukraine tensions pushed US stocks sharply lower.
As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.71 up from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.64 (last year it was 16.68). Wednesday's P/E estimate is 14.62 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 14.62 (year ago it was 13.90) and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.22 down from Monday's dividend yield of 2.23 (last year it was 2.37). The Dow's all-time high was 17113.54 on July 2, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2558.33 down 21.77 from Monday's numerator of 2580.10. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.28 down 72 cents from Monday's average closing price of $85.00. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.46 (HD/UNH) up 29 cents from Monday's median closing price of $80.75 (HD/UNH). The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume was Intel.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,177 ($258,010 - 255,833).
8/5/14 Tuesday 4:09 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahumudova & Barbara Kollmeyer says U.S. stocks closed sharply lower on Tuesday following reports that Russia is building up its military presence on the border with Ukraine.
Fears that the Federal Reserve might raise interest rates sooner than expected in the wake of fresh signs that the economy is gaining strength lingered in the background.
The S&P 500 SPX -0.97% closed 18.78 points, or 1%, lower at 1,920.21. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.84% dropped 139.81 points, or 0.8%, to 16,429.47. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.71% fell 31.05 points, or 0.7%, to 4,352.84.
Nichoalas Colas, market strategists at ConvergEx Group, a global brokerage company based in New York, said it was eerie to see investors start worrying about a possible full-blown war between Ukraine and Russia on the 100th anniversary of the start of the World War I.
“Over the past several months markets had shrugged off such a possibility and discounted a potential for a real war. The news that Russia might have its troops inside Ukraine instead of waging a proxy war caught a lot of investors flatfooted,” Colas said.
“If this is the beginning of a correction, we expect it to be a slow-motion one. People are just not making sudden moves,” he added.
Tuesday’s economic news showed U.S. service-sector companies expanded in July at the faster pace in nine years, according to survey of senior executives. Meanwhile, factory orders in June climbed to the highest level on record and topped estimates compiled by MarketWatch.
Among individual companies, shares in Coach Inc.COH +4.34% rallied 4.3% after better-than-expected earnings.
Target Corp. TGT -4.40% shares fell 4.4% after the retailer lowered its outlook.
Walgreen Co. WAG -4.15% fell 4.2% on reports of the drugstore chain’s intent to keep its headquarters in the U.S. after it takes over British pharmacy chain Alliance Boots, rather than move its domicile abroad to lower its tax bill.
Motorola Solutions Inc.MSI -4.24% fell 4.2% after the networking-systems company reported a drop in second-quarter sales and guidance for the current period came in weaker than expected.
Groupon, Inc GRPN -17.53% shares plunged 13% in after-hours session after reporting results.
In other markets, the Nikkei 225 JP:NIK -.00% fell to its weakest closing level in more than a week, after the HSBC China services purchasing managers index came in at the lowest reading in the nearly nine-year history of the index. China is a big export market for Japan manufacturers. Other Asian markets were generally lower as well.
European stocks /XX:SXXP +0.29% closed higher. September futures contracts for both crude oil CLU4 -0.89% were lower and futures for goldGCU4 +0.02% rose 0.1% after the selling took hold in equity markets. The dollar DXY +0.24% held steady.

The Financial Times reported that Russia has dramatically increased the number of troops and vehicles positioned on its eastern border with Ukraine during the past few days, reviving fears among investors that the conflict could escalate. Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his government to prepare retaliatory measures against U.S. and European economic sanctions imposed on Russia.
