Post No. 2,806 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 17122.01 ITS ALL TIME RECORD HIGH up 15.31 or 0.09% from Tuesday's close of 17106.70. Of the Dow components 16 gained, Coke was unchanged and 13 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth up $1.26 or 1.48%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down 74 cents and percentage-wise was United Technologies down 0.54%.
As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.18 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.11 (last year it was 15.59). Today's P/E estimate is 15.05 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 15.05 (year ago it was 13.53) and today's dividend yield is 2.19 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.23 (last year it was 2.52). The Dow's all-time high was 17122.01 on August 27, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2666.17 up 2.38 from Tuesday's numerator of 2663.79. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.87 up 7 cents from Tuesday's average closing price of $88.80. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87.81 (UNH/AXP) down 39 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $88.80 (UNH/AXP). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was GE.
If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $238 ($266,617 - $266,379- $265,914).
8/27/14 Wed. 4:38 MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis & Sara Sjolin The U.S. stock market finished roughly flat on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 staying around 2,000 a day after it closed over that milestone for the first time. With no major U.S. economic reports on tap, traders instead focused on a rebound by Best Buy Inc. shares, the latest Apple Inc. gadgets and earnings reports from Tiffany & Co. and other companies. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.00% edged up 0.10 point to 2,000.12 for its 31st record close this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.09% rose 15.31 points, or 0.1%, to end at 17,122.01, leaving the blue-chip gauge just 0.1% from its July 16 all-time closing high. The S&P and Dow have both climbed for three straight days.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.02% dipped 1.02 points, or less than 0.1%, to 4,569.62. The tech-heavy index snapped a four-day winning streak. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway is investing $3 billion in the Burger King-Tim Hortons deal, and will pay the U.S. corporate tax rate on any income it receives from the merger. Photo: Getty The S&P 500 hitting 2,000 makes investors take a step back and reflect, said Sandy Lincoln, chief market strategist at BMO Asset Management U.S.
The milestone “is pretty remarkable, but on the other hand, it’s pretty sustainable,” Lincoln told MarketWatch. The market’s advance makes sense given corporate fundamentals, an improving consumer and other supportive factors, he said.
Lincoln said he’s been talking with clients about companies’ second-quarter revenue growth, noting it’s helped protect profit margins and can fuel capital spending. “That top-line growth does a lot of good things,” he said. He said there’s a case to be made for overweighting cyclical plays, such as tech and industrials, as well as parts of health care and financials.
But the S&P 500’s “current advance may be getting overextended,” said Colin Cieszynski, chief market strategist at CMC Markets, in emailed comments. He said a drop is possible down to initial support near 1,990, then to additional support around the index’s 50-day moving average near 1,965.
Movers and shakers: Best Buy Co. Inc. BBY, +0.32% was the biggest winner in the S&P 500, rising 6.3% and recouping most of Tuesday’s 6.9% loss. Analysts at B. Riley & Co. said the retailer’s seemingly gloomy holiday guidance is actually better than it appears, according to a Dow Jones Newswires report. Tiffany & Co. TIF, +0.97% was another notable winner in the S&P 500 after the jeweler lifted its full-year earnings forecast and reported a 16% rise in second-quarter profit. Tiffany closed up 1%.
Apple Inc. AAPL, +1.23% finished up 1.2% at another all-time closing high. The tech giant is developing a new iPad with a larger screen, a Bloomberg report said, while tech news site Re/Code said Apple will unveil a new wearable device at its Sept. 9 event where it’s expected to launch two new iPhone models. Economic data: While no major U.S. economic reports came out Wednesday, the data calender gets busier later this week, with the second estimate on second-quarter U.S. gross domestic product on Thursday and consumer-confidence numbers due Friday.
