by Dan Kolber

Post No. 2,808 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Thursday at 17079.57 down 42.44 or 0.25%  from Wednesday's close of 17122.01.  Of the Dow components  11 gained and 19 declined.  The biggest gainer   dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Home Depot up 64 cents or 0.7%.  The biggest decliner   dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Visa down $2.53 or 1.17%.

As of the open of  the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Thursday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.21 up from yesterday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.18  (last year it was 15.46).  Today's P/E estimate is 15.05 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 15.05 (year ago it was 13.53) and today's dividend yield is 2.19 unchanged from  yesterday's dividend yield of 2.19  (last year it was 2.52). The Dow's all-time high was 17138.20 on July 16,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2659.56 down  6.61  from  Wednesday's   numerator of 2666.17.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.65 down 22 cents from Wednesday's  average closing price of $88.87.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87.68  (UNH/AXP) down 13 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $87.81 (UNH/AXP). The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Intel.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $661  ($266,617 - $265,956).

8/28/14 Thurs. 4:44 MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis & Sara Sjolin says
U.S. stocks stepped back Thursday in light trading, with the S&P 500 retreating from 2,000 and halting its three-day winning streak. Many market watchers blamed the decline on fresh Russian aggression toward Ukraine.Kiev said Russian forces had entered Ukraine and seized the coastal town of Novoazovsk, and a NATO official said Russia’s actions in Ukraine are “more overt now.” A stronger-than-anticipated reading on U.S. economic growth failed to push equities higher. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.17%   fell 3.38 points, or 0.2%, to close at 1,996.74. The index had been down 0.5% intraday, but lifted up from its session lows. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.25%  shed 42.44 points, or 0.3%, to end at 17,079.57 after being down almost 104 points, while the Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.26%  lost 11.93 points, or 0.3%, to finish at 4,557.69.Total composite volume was at its lowest level of the year for a full trading day, and market action is likely to be light again Friday ahead of the Labor Day weekend. All three benchmarks remain on track for weekly gains, as well as monthly advances of more than 3%. On Wednesday, the S&P 500 and Dow both closed higher for a third straight session, with the S&P holding above 2,000 and nabbing its 31st record close this year.GDP beats forecasts: The second estimate for second-quarter U.S. gross domestic product indicated expansion of 4.2%. Economists polled by MarketWatch had predicted 3.9% growth in GDP, down from an initial read of 4%.Weekly jobless claims came in at 298,000, a slightly more encouraging result than expected, and an index that measures how many U.S. homes are ready to be sold jumped to its highest level in 11 months. What strategists are saying: The U.S. stock market dropped partly due to Russia-Ukraine concerns, but a bigger driver could be the upbeat GDP report putting further pressure on the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates, according to Doug Coté, chief market strategist at Voya Investment Management. He said it’s “dangerous” to have a zero-interest rate policy when growth is at 4.2%. “We need to get off a zero-rate policy as soon as possible,” Coté told MarketWatch.Expectations of higher rates could increase volatility for stocks in the near term, but the Voya strategist still recommends buying equities and other risk assets “because ultimately what’s raising the prospect of rising rates is strong economic growth,” he said. The latest flare up in the Russia-Ukraine conflict “could blow over quickly as both sides pull back from the brink,” said analysts at Capital Economics in emailed comments. “But for now it may be time for the markets to batten down the hatches again, especially ahead of the long weekend in the US (Monday is Labor Day).”Movers and shakers: Abercrombie & Fitch Co. ANF, -4.84% and Williams-Sonoma Inc. WSM, -11.96%  finished down 4.8% and 12%, respectively, after their quarterly earnings reports, while Signet Jewelers Ltd. SIG, +7.72%  rose 7.7% in the wake of its results.Visa Inc. V, -1.17%   fared worst among Dow components, falling 1.2% after Raymond James analysts downgraded the credit-card giant to market perform, citing a lack of positive catalysts. TripAdvisor Inc. TRIP, -2.37%  was the S&P 500’s biggest decliner, closing down 2.4%.The PowerShares QQQ Trust QQQ, -0.11% closed down 0.1%, snapping an 11-session winning streak. The big ETF that tracks the Nasdaq 100 NDX, -0.17% last achieved an 11-day winning streak in 2010.
Other markets: European stocks closed lower as the first country-specific reports on August consumer prices fueled deflation fears and renewed Russia-Ukraine tensions weighed. Asian markets finished mostly in the red.Oil prices gained, while gold also moved higher. The dollar advanced against most of its rivals.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2666.17  up 2.38   from  Tuesday's   numerator of 2663.79.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. 8/27/14 Wed. 4:38 MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis & Sara Sjolin The U.S. stock market finished roughly flat on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 staying around 2,000 a day after it closed over that milestone for the first time. With no major U.S. economic reports on tap, traders instead focused on a rebound by Best Buy Inc. shares, the latest Apple Inc. gadgets and earnings reports from Tiffany & Co. and other companies.         The S&P 500 SPX, +0.00% edged up 0.10 point to 2,000.12 for its 31st record close this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.09% rose 15.31 points, or 0.1%, to end at 17,122.01, leaving the blue-chip gauge just 0.1% from its July 16 all-time closing high. The S&P and Dow have both climbed for three straight days.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.02%  dipped 1.02 points, or less than 0.1%, to 4,569.62. The tech-heavy index snapped a four-day winning streak. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway is investing $3 billion in the Burger King-Tim Hortons deal, and will pay the U.S. corporate tax rate on any income it receives from the merger. Photo: Getty The S&P 500 hitting 2,000 makes investors take a step back and reflect, said Sandy Lincoln, chief market strategist at BMO Asset Management U.S.
The milestone “is pretty remarkable, but on the other hand, it’s pretty sustainable,” Lincoln told MarketWatch. The market’s advance makes sense given corporate fundamentals, an improving consumer and other supportive factors, he said.
Lincoln said he’s been talking with clients about companies’ second-quarter revenue growth, noting it’s helped protect profit margins and can fuel capital spending. “That top-line growth does a lot of good things,” he said. He said there’s a case to be made for overweighting cyclical plays, such as tech and industrials, as well as parts of health care and financials.
But the S&P 500’s “current advance may be getting overextended,” said Colin Cieszynski, chief market strategist at CMC Markets, in emailed comments. He said a drop is possible down to initial support near 1,990, then to additional support around the index’s 50-day moving average near 1,965.
Movers and shakers: Best Buy Co. Inc. BBY, +0.32% was the biggest winner in the S&P 500, rising 6.3% and recouping most of Tuesday’s 6.9% loss. Analysts at B. Riley & Co. said the retailer’s seemingly gloomy holiday guidance is actually better than it appears, according to a Dow Jones Newswires report. Tiffany & Co. TIF, +0.97%  was another notable winner in the S&P 500 after the jeweler lifted its full-year earnings forecast and reported a 16% rise in second-quarter profit. Tiffany closed up 1%.
Apple Inc. AAPL, +1.23%   finished up 1.2% at another all-time closing high. The tech giant is developing a new iPad with a larger screen, a Bloomberg report said, while tech news site Re/Code said Apple will unveil a new wearable device at its Sept. 9 event where it’s expected to launch two new iPhone models. Economic data: While no major U.S. economic reports came out Wednesday, the data calender gets busier later this week, with the second estimate on second-quarter U.S. gross domestic product on Thursday and consumer-confidence numbers due Friday.
