MarketWatch Monday 10/10/11 3:43 pm by Deb Levine says U.S. stocks rallied more than 2% Monday as France and Germany pledged to do everything necessary to support Europe’s banks, while investors also looked ahead to the unofficial kickoff of third-quarter earnings season. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +2.97% rose 230 points, or 2.1%, to 11,337, after touching 11,395 intraday. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index SPX +3.41% added 26 points, or 2.3%, to 1,182. At one point it was up 3%, which would have been the biggest gain in more than a month. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +3.50% gained 55 points, or 2.2%, to 2,533. All 30 Dow components were in the green, led by Bank of America Corp. BAC -0.16% , up 4.8%, and J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. On the New York Stock Exchange, there were about 9 advancing companies for every decliner. As of 3:20 p.m. Eastern time, volume of advancing shares made up 94% of trades. New York Stock Exchange volume totaled 536 million shares and NYSE composite volume was around 2.8 billion shares. U.S. stocks followed European markets up after German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy said over the weekend that they will reveal plans for a banking-sector recapitalization by early November. “There had been a reluctance to address bank recapitalization, which the market views as critical. This is recognition of the issue and a line drawn in the sand, which is viewed as progress,” said Russ Koesterich, chief investment strategist at iShares.
The French and German comments gave investors some relief that European officials may take bigger steps deemed necessary to control the region’s sovereign-debt crisis, increasing the appeal of riskier assets like stocks, commodities and the euro, which rallied against the U.S. dollar.
“The market might be too euphoric, but it’s what we’re focused on,” said Nick Kalivas, equities and fixed-income analyst at MF Global.

MarketWatch Friday 10/7/11 4:26 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks ended lower Friday, denting weekly gains, as credit-rating cuts for Italy and Spain offset a better-than-anticipated payrolls report, prompting caution before the weekend. “The economic data stream this week has been almost entirely better than expected and almost entirely ignored. The good news is we again have not gone into a double-dip recession, the bad news is nobody seems to care right now with all of our focus on Greece,” said Art Hogan, head of product strategy at Lazard Capital Markets, of Europe’s debt crisis. “We have a market that is stuck in no-man’s land, we’ve been in the same range for two months, roughly 1,100 to 1,200 on the S&P 500. We’re not oversold, we’re not overbought, we’re right where we should be headed into the weekend,” Hogan added. After three days of triple-digit gains, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 20.21 points, or 0.2%, to 11,103.12, leaving the blue chips with a 1.7% rise from last Friday’s close and marking the index’s second straight weekly gain, its first such streak since July. Up 2.1% for the week, the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index shed 9.51 points, or 0.8%, to 1,155.46. Among notable movers, shares of Sprint Nextel Corp. fell 20% after the wireless-service provider said it would need to raise more capital to expand a high-speed data network. The Nasdaq Composite Index declined 27.47 points, or 1.1%, to 2,479.35, a level that leaves it with a 2.7% weekly rise. For every stock that rose more than two fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where more than 1.1 billion shares traded hands; composite volume neared 4.8 billion shares. Crude-oil futures finished at $82.98 a barrel, a gain of 39 cents on the day, while gold futures lost $17.40 to end at $1,635.80 an ounce. Read more on oil futures and Read more on gold futures. Stocks took a definitive turn lower after Fitch cut Spain and Italy’s credit ratings, saying both countries were more likely to default doe to Europe’s debt trouble. Investor sentiment drew a lift from a rosier-than-forecast report on U.S. jobs growth but lost steam as investors squared positions ahead of the weekend. “The market is giving up gains as market participants are conscious of making large bets going into the weekend, so it’s not surprising to see a flattening of positions,” said Hogan. Ahead of the opening bell, the Labor Department reported employers added 103,000 workers in September after a revised 57,000 increase the month before. The unemployment rate remained at 9.1%. “It’s positive news, it’s not a robust number but expectations were relatively low. It’s not enough to make a dent in the unemployment rate, but it indicates we’re not moving into a recession, which some have been pricing into the market,” said Brad Sorensen, director of market and sector analysis at the Schwab Center for Financial Research.
