MarketWatch Wednesday 10/26/11 5:21 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks struck solid gains Wednesday, recouping much of the prior day’s drop, after Europe reached an agreement in principle on a bank-recapitalization plan and on better-than-forecast earnings from corporations including Boeing Co.
“The market is up today because our expectation bar had been set significantly low for today’s European summit, so we were expecting a numberless communiqué, so with that being the base case, we’ve shifted our focus to better-than-expected earnings across the board,” said Art Hogan, equity strategist at Lazard Capital Markets. “We fully believe the euro zone does not have a death wish and will come up with a constructive plan by next week,” when the G-20 group of major industrialized and developed economies meets, Hogan added. EU leaders said in a joint statement they had come to terms on a broad strategy at a summit in Brussels, but offered no figure for bank recapitalization requirements. After rising as much as 184.6 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished at 11,869.04, up 162.42, or 1.4%, with all but three of its 30 components gaining. Leading blue-chip gains, Boeing shares rose 4.5% after the aerospace giant reported a larger profit for its latest quarter than Wall Street anticipated and hiked its outlook for 2011 earnings. Off the Dow, Corning rose 3% after the specialty-glass maker tallied better third-quarter results than expected. The S&P 500 Index added 12.95 points, or 1.1%, to 1,242, with energy and finance companies gaining the most and consumer-discretionary firms the only laggard among its 10 sectors. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 12.25 points, or 0.5%, at 2,650.67. Shares of Amazon.com Inc. slumped 13% after the online mega retailer reported lower-than-expected earnings for the third quarter and gave a disappointing forecast for the current period. For every stock that fell, four gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 1.1 billion shares traded; composite volume neared 4.8 billion. Equities started out strong after Germany endorsed a hike to Europe’s bailout fund. Stock indexes had wavered amid varying headlines out of Europe, with Bloomberg reporting European Union talks with banks on bondholder losses had stalled, despite what seemed to be a building consensus on a 50% write-down for Greece’s lenders. An EU official speaking on condition of anonymity told Bloomberg the discord was over the details of the proposed transaction. “The rest of the day’s activities will center on European concessions, debt write-downs and how much of this can they stick the banks with without causing them to fail,” noted Kevin Giddis, a fixed-income strategist at Morgan Keegan. All three benchmark indexes spent much or a small portion of the session in the red on worries talks to resolve Europe’s debt crisis might be stalling, only to turn upward again on various related reports. Dow Jones reported French President Nicolas Sarkozy planned to call China’s leader on Thursday to talk about how Beijing might contribute to the euro-area rescue fund aimed at purchasing sovereign debt issued by Greece and other troubled European nations. “The market is rallying on the story that China will buy bonds issued by the EFSF (European Financial Stability Facility),” Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak, said in emailed comments, citing a similar report in the Irish Times newspaper. “This is not a surprise as they expressed interest back in January,” added Boockvar, who noted that the EFSF is triple-A-rated paper, with the purchase providing the Chinese with diversification from U.S. Treasurys. Also Reuters, citing EU sources, said euro-zone leaders planned to expand the bailout fund to about 1 trillion euros ($1.38 trillion), using leverage of at least four times. Read more on Europe plans to leverage the sovereign rescue fund.
Investor sentiment also had been lifted by a government report that illustrated companies hiked orders for large machinery and other longer-lasting goods in September. Excluding orders for planes and other transit equipment, business expenditures on core capital goods climbed at their most rapid pace in six months. Separately, the Commerce Department reported new U.S. home sales rose 5.7% to a 313,000 annual pace in September.
