For the session, the Dow ended up 102.55 points, or 0.9%, to 11,518.85, led by Disney Co. up 3.5%. The S&P 500 gained 11.71 points, or 1%, to 1,207.25. Bank of America one of the stocks that tends to decline when euro zone debt worries hit the market rose 9 cents.

NYT pB11 "Markets end mixed a day after rally" by David Jolly says stocks treaded water all day awaiting the outcome of a vote in Bratislava where Slovakian lawmakers debated whether to back an expansion of the European bailout fund.

USA Today p4B "Markets mixed in anticipation of positive earnings season" by Bloomberg says stocks were mixed Tues as optimism about 3Q earnings overshadowed concern about Europe's debt crisis.

MarketWatch Tuesday 10/11/11 3:43 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks took a tentative stance Tuesday, with the S&P 500 Index retreating a bit after the prior day’s rally, as investors looked to third-quarter earnings while tracking Europe. “It’s really more of a kickoff to earnings season to see if the quarter is as bad as the economic data was indicating in August and September,” said Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners. China stepped in to buy shares of its battered banks, which have been caught in a selloff that analysts say reflects a broader loss of trust in the integrity of corporate earnings and government statistics. After the close, aluminum producer Alcoa Inc. will release quarterly results, marking the unofficial start to third-quarter season of earnings reports. Alcoa’s results could give “an early read of what the cyclical part of the U.S. economy looks like, and we’ve seen a change in the tenor of the market from cyclical companies to more defensive issues,” said Nolte. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 23.24 points at 11,409.94. The S&P 500 Index was flat at 1,194.74, with utilities hardest hit and technology up the most among its 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 9.51 points at 2,575.56, lifted in large part by Apple Inc., its shares up 2.8% after record orders for its latest iPhone version. Advancers edged just ahead of decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where 607 million shares traded by 3:30 p.m. Eastern. Slovakian lawmakers on Tuesday delayed a vote on whether to approve the expanded European Financial Stability Facility, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal that did not specify when the vote could happen. Slovakia is the last of 17 euro-member nations to do so. An initial vote was expected to fail, but the leader of Slovakia’s biggest opposition party expressed confidence the deal would be ratified. “Today is kind of a break from yesterday’s action. We were promised some stuff later in the month from [European Central Bank President Jean-Claude] Trichet and [French President Nicolas] Sarkozy,” according to Nolte. Read more on Europe bailout efforts. “The next big event is whether Greece takes a haircut on debt, and that’s probably a month away,” said Owen Fitzpatrick, an equities strategist at DWS Investments. U.S. stocks on Monday rose 3% after German and French leaders vowed to devise a strategy to confront the region’s debt trouble, pushing the S&P 500 above its 50-day moving average for the first time in more than two months. Also Tuesday, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said he would unveil a proposal for recapitalizing European banks on Wednesday. Slovakia's EFSF vote has now been linked to a confidence vote in the government itself as local politics take a dramatic turn. A 'no' vote still can't be ruled out, setting the scene for a repeat vote. But when? “We have seen stock prices quickly move out of a deeply oversold zone primarily on news coming out of Europe. Given the strength of the recent weeklong rally, near-term U.S. stock prices appear a bit extended,” Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davidson Cos., wrote in an emailed note. Among stocks in the news, Dollar Thrift Automotive Group Inc. fell 1.5% after the car-rental company said it would continue on its own after getting no further offers from Hertz Global Holdings Inc. or others by its Monday deadline.
