Post No. 1,274 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of September 23, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Wednesday's The Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, USA Today, The New York Times, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 11,577.05 up 180.05 or 1.58% from Monday's close of 11,397. For the year the Dow is even. Of the 30 Dow components 28 gained and 2 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Chevron CVX $102.95 +4.34 4.4% 11,818,613 NYSE and percentage-wise was JPMorgan JPM $32.87 1.83 5.9% 62,964,899 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was IBM $178.9 -7.69 4.12% 15,476,079 NYSE.

WSJ pC4 "A volatile session ends with stocks up" by Steve Russolillo says shares rose sharply but failed to recapture steep losses in the prior session, as conflicting reports on Europe's debt crisis whipped the market around during the final trading hour. Bank of America was the biggest gainer among the Dow rising 61 cents after it reported 3Q earnings that exceeded expectations. IBM is charted under Bad News after quarterly sales came in lower than analysts hoped making it one of 2 Dow firms that was in the red. Coke fell 26 cents even after its 3Q earnings & rev came in above expectations. Johnson & Johnson shares rose 63 cents after it reported better than expected earnings as favorable currency exchange rates helped lift their quarterly sales.

Fin Times p24 "Goldman and Bank of America to the fore as banks stage rally" by Ajay Makan says bank stocks rallied strongly on Tues even though Goldman Sachs posted its second quarterly loss as a public company and Bank of America only avoided being int her ed after accounting adjustments & disposals.

NYT pB10 "Bank shares lift Wall St in a turnaround" by Chris Hauser says fin'l stocks propelled Wall St higher on Tues as more banks and companies in other industries reported quarterly results, providing investors with fresh insight into the outlook for the global economy.

USA Today p4B "European accord, sturdy rally have many feeling relieved" by Bloomberg says stocks rallied Tues sending the S&P 500 to its highest level since Aug, after Bank of America surged and a report that France & Germany have reached an agreement to boost Europe's rescue fund.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Today's trailing P/E ratio is 12.72 up from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.70 (year ago it was 14.76); Wednesday's P/E estimate is 11.70 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 11.70 (year ago it was 13.25), and today's dividend yield is 2.67 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.72 (last year it was 2.57). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,529.67 up 20.79 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,508.88. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.99 up $0.79 from Monday's average closing price of $50.20. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $41.11 (DD/VZ) up 0.73 from Monday's median closing price of 40.38. The lowest volume was MMM $78.36 2.48 3.27% 4,037,832 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $6.64 0.61 10.12% 489,167,754 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $2,079 ($152,967 - $150,588).

MarketWatch Tuesday 10/18/11 4:35 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks rallied Tuesday, adding to gains late in the session, after a British newspaper reported that France and Germany had reached an agreement to bolster the euro area’s rescue fund. “This rally seems different, and the news and actions out of Europe seem more substantial,” said Jeff Kleintop, chief market strategist for LPL Financial. “The news out of Europe has taken the fear of a 2008-like financial crisis off the table, although certainly there are still lingering issues,” he added. Wall Street spent much of the summer starting to price a financial crisis into the market, and the recent change in sentiment could be the impetus for getting the S&P 500 to break out of its 1,100-to-1,225 range, Kleintop said. After holding the 1,200 mark at Monday’s close, the S&P 500 Index gained 24.52 points, or 2%, to 1,225.38, with financials rallying most strongly among the index’s 10 sectors. It was the index’s highest close since Aug. 3 and made up for Monday’s 1.9% loss. In its report, the Guardian, citing European Union diplomats, said France and Germany had come to terms on an accord to boost the European Financial Stability Facility, or EFSF, to 2 trillion euros ($2.47 trillion) as part of a comprehensive plan that should be endorsed at a weekend summit. “The EFSF will effectively become an insurer, thereby overcoming European Central Bank resistance to the idea of turning into a bank,” commented Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak. Stocks had been higher ahead of the Guardian report, helped by rallying bank stocks after some better-than-forecast earnings and after German Chancellor Angela Merkel told lawmakers Tuesday that an upcoming summit in Brussels would mark a large step in resolving the euro-area debt crisis, if not the final one. Europe has been “an important driver for much of the rally over the last couple of weeks,” said Kleintop, who likened developments there to U.S. economic news and corporate earnings: “Not great but better than feared. The fact that companies continue to show top-line revenue growth shows the country isn’t slipping into recession.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 180.05 points, or 1.6%, to 11,577.05, reclaiming much of Monday’s 247-point decline and coming back from an intraday deficit of 101 points. All but two of its 30 components rose, led by Bank of America , which was up 10% after the bank reported a third-quarter profit aided by asset sales and accounting gains. Read details on Bank of America’s quarterly results. One of two Dow components in the red, International Business Machines Corp.’s fell 4.1% after third-quarter results reported late Monday disappointed investors. “IBM’s earnings weren’t the blowout hoped for, and that will be another hurdle for the bulls to face. ... Companies are meeting, but not beating,” Marc Pado, market strategist at Cantor Fitzgerald, wrote in emailed commentary. Returning to positive turf for 2011, the Nasdaq Composite rose 42.51 points, or 1.6%, to 2,657.43. Advancers outpaced decliners by a roughly 5-to-1 ratio on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume neared 1.1 billion; composite volume topped 4.9 billion. Gold futures fell $23.80 to end at $1,652.80 an ounce, and crude-oil futures added $1.96 to $88.34 a barrel. U.S. wholesale prices rose more than expected in September, with the producer price index up 0.8% after an unchanged reading a month ago, according to data from the Labor Department. The figures, reported before the opening bell, had a limited impact on U.S. stock-index futures. Also Tuesday, the National Association of Home Builders reported its index of builder sentiment climbed to 18 in October from 14, indicating less pessimism about the embattled housing market. Home-builder confidence gauge climbs in October .
