MarketWatch Thursday 10/20/11 5:06 pm by Wallace Witkowski & Laura Mandaro says US stocks closed an uneven day of trading with modest gains, finding some support in a commitment by Germany and France to produce a comprehensive plan to bolster the region’s banks and expand a sovereign rescue fund. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 37.16 points, or 0.3%, at 11,541.78. J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. led gainers, rising 2.7%. Intel Corp. / was off the most, with a 2.6% slide. Stocks Thursday were weighed by early news reports that the EU summit — seen as a crucial step in coming up with new measures to prevent one or more sovereign debt defaults in Europe — could be postponed. But they tacked higher after Germany and France issued a joint statement that they would meet Saturday night ahead of the EU summit on Sunday, with the aim of providing a “comprehensive and ambitious response to the current crisis in the euro area,” including a revamped bailout fund and plans to strengthen European bank capital. They’ll follow that meeting with another one no later than Wednesday at which they will finalize their agreement, according to the statement. Read more on what's expected at EU summit. “Overshadowing it all is Europe,” said Doug Roberts, chief investment officer for Channel Capital Research. “People are really concerned about an 11th hour resolution” for Europe, he said. Extending the week’s choppy trading, stocks spent most of Thursday’s session bouncing between gains and losses, pushing the Dow average across zero 45 times. The index has closed in a different direction from its prior session for 10 straight sessions, the longest such streak since May 2009, when stocks were climbing off bear market lows hit in March of that year. Stocks had gained in morning trading after a regional October index of manufacturing showed its first positive reading in three months.
The Philadelphia Federal Reserve said its index of manufacturing activity rebounded to 8.7 in October from negative 17.5 in September, the first positive reading in three months, and topping views for a a negative 10 reading. U.S. economic data and stronger earnings reports have vied for investors’ attention with deep uncertainty about Europe, where large deficits in some countries have made at least one sovereign bond default likely. James Paulsen, chief investment strategist at Wells Capital Management, said the market’s early drop reflected anxiety leading into the weekend meeting, and that U.S. data is consistently showing the economy is not heading toward a double-dip recession. “If we weren’t having good numbers, we’d be at 1,100 [on the S&P 500 Index] or worse,” Paulsen said. The Standard & Poor’s 500 ended up 5.51 points, or 0.5%, at 1,215.39, led by a 1.8% gain in financials as regional banks led by Fifth Third Bancorp. rallied.
Tech stocks fell the most on the index, weighed by a 5.4% drop in Dell Inc. and declines in chip makers on worries that Thai floods would disrupt some electronic parts production, perhaps for more than a quarter. The Nasdaq Composite lost 5.42 points, or 0.2%, to close at 2,598.62. Advancers surpassed decliners by 3 to 2 on the New York Stock Exchange, where 958 million shares traded hands. Headlines from Europe largely overshadowed the day’s U.S. economic reports. The Conference Board’s index of leading indicators rose 0.2% in September, in line with views. And the National Association of Realtors said existing home sales fell 3% in September, to a seasonally adjusted annually rate of 4.91 million. Economists had expected 4.9 million. Ahead of the opening bell, the Labor Department said first-time claims for unemployment benefits slipped to 403,000 last week from 409,000 two weeks ago. Economists had expected a drop to 400,000. Many analysts look for a sustained fall below 400,000 as a sign labor markets are improving.
