Post No. 1,291 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of September 23, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,231.11 up 22.56 or 0.18% from Thursday's close of 12,208.55. For the week the Dow is up 422.32 points or 3.58% from last Friday's close of 11,808.79. Of the 30 Dow components 21 gained and 9 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Hewlett Packard HPQ $27.94 +0.95 3.52% 27,459,454 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise NYSE and percentage-wise was Home Depot HD $36.12 -1.10 2.96% 14,060,123 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.45 up from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.16 (year ago it was 13.97); Friday's P/E estimate is 11.75 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 11.75 (year ago it was 13.25), and today's dividend yield is 2.54 down from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.61 (last year it was 2.54). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,616.09 up 2.98 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,613.11. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.87 up 0.10 from Thursday's average closing price of $53.77. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $43.50 (DD/VZ) up 0.30 from Thursday's median closing price of 43.20. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $59.48 +0.08 0.13% 3,593,440 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $7.35 +0.13 1.8% 272,496,823 NYSE.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $298 ($161,610 - $161,311).

MarketWatch Friday 10/28/11 5:03 pm by Kate Gibson & Myra P. Saefong says US stocks finished mostly higher Friday, after shifting between gains and losses throughout the trading session, as relief over European progress in combating regional debt helped key indexes score weekly gains. “When Europe didn’t implode and even came up with a ‘plan’ to fix its pervasive debt problems, that left the shorts with no room to hide,” said Brian Greenberg, owner of wealth management firm Brian Greenberg & Associates. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 22.56 points, or 0.2%, to close up to 12,231.11, with 16 of its 30 components climbing. The blue-chip index was ahead 3.6% for the week and up 11% for the month so far. The index also logged its fifth-straight weekly gain. Scoring a 3.8% weekly rise, up 12% month to date, the S&P 500 Index added 0.5 points, or 0.04%, to 1,285.09, with energy companies up the most and consumer-discretionary stocks the largest laggard among its 10 sectors. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 1.48 points, or 0.1%, to close at 2,737.15, a level that has it up 3.8% on the week and 9.9% ahead for October so far. “Emerging markets such as Russia and China have strongly outperformed, small-cap indices like the Russell 2000 index have advanced more than the S&P 500” and financials had been top performers since last week, said Michael Gayed, chief investment strategist at Pension Partners LLC. Those factors are what “differentiates the move up in equities” this week from other attempts. On Friday, stocks were split almost evenly between advancers and decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where 1 billion shares traded by the close.
The stock market is “approaching key technical levels,” according to Greenberg. “The coming week will be the battle to breach these levels so they can become floor and not the ceiling for this current move.” On Friday, Wall Street offered muted reaction to U.S. economic reports.
The Commerce Department reported consumers’ spending picked up last month, increasing 0.6% after a 0.2% growth in August. Incomes advanced 0.1% in September after falling 0.1% the prior month, and the nation’s savings rate fell to nearly a four-year low. Also, the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan’s sentiment index was revised up to 60.9 in October after an initial reading of 57.5. While better than expected, the number still compares unfavorably with the 10-month average, noted Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak. “That said, as we head into the holiday season, impulse purchases and gift-buying run on their own emotion separate from overall consumer confidence,” Boockvar added in emailed reaction to the sentiment gauge. The Dow and S&P 500 are in line to tally double-digit gains for October. Putting the recent surge in context, Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG, wrote in emailed commentary that the near-20% decline in the S&P 500 seen over July and August came, in his view, on two false assumptions: “First, that the U.S. was in or imminently entering a recession, and second, [that] the euro area was on the verge of collapse.” Greenhaus argues that if neither was accurate, the S&P 500 belongs closer to 1,300 than to 1,100. Investors would be wise to temper their expectations, especially in the week ahead — the final big one for quarterly earnings and with both the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank meeting and holding news conferences, he said. The U.S. employment report for October, scheduled for release on Nov. 4, also will come into play in shaping investors’ market perceptions, the strategist pointed out.
