Post No. 1,245 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of September 23, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's, the Sat/Sun combined editions of each of The Wall St. Journal & Financial Times, & each of Sunday's & Saturday's editions of The New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 10,913.38 down 240.6 or 2.6% from Thursday's close of 11153.98. Of the 30 Dow components only Merck gained and 29 declined. The only and therefore biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Merck MRK $32.7 +0.04 0.12% 24,098,271NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise IBM $174.87 -4.30 2.4% 7,752,800 NYSE and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $22.45 -1.33 5.59% 39,539,686 NYSE.

WSJ pB5 "Dow limps to finish" by Brendan Conway says stocks closed out the market's biggest quarterly drop since the fin'l crisis in '08 with a triple digit dive in the Dow. The materials sector led all S&P sectors lower as it fell 3.7%. Two of the Dow's 3 worst performing stocks in the 3rd quarter led the way lower Fri as Hewlett-Packard fell $1.33 and Alcoa shed 49 cents. Bank of America's stock is charted going down from $11 to its current price.

Fin Times p13 "Investors retreat to safety of big name companies" by Ajay Makan says a poor week ended a miserable quarter on Wall st. Most big banks fared well but Bank of America fell 3% only 12 cents off its year low. BofA dropped certain claims vs. Lehman Bros. estate to resolve its bankruptcy case.

NYT pB6 "S&P 500 ceclined 14$ in 3rd quarter" by Bloomberg says stocks fell on Fri sending the S&P to its biggest quarterly drop since '08 - 14%. Reports from China & Germany fueled the decline on concerns that the global economy is slowing.

As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B4 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.7 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.4 (year ago it was 13.01); Saturday's P/E estimate is 11.85 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 10.83 (year ago it was 12.84), and Saturday's dividend yield is 2.82 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.76 (last year it was 2.60). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,441.97 down 31.79 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,473.76. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $48.07 down $1.06 from Thursday's average closing price of $49.13. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $38.89 (AXP/HD) down 1.18 from Thursday's median closing price of $40.07.
