Post No. 1,265 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of September 23, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 11,478.13 down 40.72 or 0.35% from Wednesday's close of 11,518.65. Of the 11 Dow components 19 gained and 5 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was MCD
$89.3 +0.94 1.06% 4,444,440 NYSE and percentage-wise was INTC
$23.39 +0.27 1.17% 50,664,814 NASDAQ-GS. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was JPM $31.59 -1.61 4.85% 72,579,170 NYSE and percentage-wise was BAC $6.23 0.35 5.32% 210,086,057 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.84 up from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.74 (year ago it was 14.91); Thursday's P/E estimate is 11.25 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 11.25 (year ago it was 13.15), and today's dividend yield is 2.69 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.71 (last year it was 2.56). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,516.60 down 5.27 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,521.87. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.55 down $0.18 from Wednesday's average closing price of $50.73. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $40.44 (DD/VZ) up 0.11 from Wednesday's median closing price of 40.33. If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $527 ($152,187 - $151,659).

MarketWatch Wednesday 10/13/11 2:46 pm by Laura Mandaro & Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks slid Thursday, though recovered off session lows as tech stocks advanced ahead of Google Inc.’s results, with financials the hardest-hit sector after disappointing earnings from J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.
The S&P 500 Index was down 8 points, or 0.7%, at 1,199.01. Financial stocks fell the most among the index’s 10 industry groups, losing 2.8%. Tech and telecom sectors turned higher. The index is still up about 6% for the month and had closed Wednesday’s session above 1,200 for the first time in three weeks. “It’s very normal when we hit a short-term peak to get some choppiness before we roll back over to do some testing,” said James Dailey, chief investment officer and senior portfolio manager at TEAM Financial Asset Management. The Nasdaq Composite Index also reversed up, adding less than 1 point to trade at 2,605. After the closing bell, is expected to report earnings of $8.74 a share. Google is the third of the large U.S. companies to unveil their quarterly results this week. Read a preview of Google earnings. The Dow industrials were recently off 61 points, or 0.5%, at 11,459. The Dow had lost as much as 141 points during the early part of the session, weighed by global data. Beyond concerns about Europe and its ability to contain its debt, Wall Street is also tracking the “China demand story, and today’s data was the second negative data point coming out of China that has us concerned about the global economy slowing,” said Art Hogan, an equity strategist at Lazard Capital markets. China’s customs bureau reported exports climbed a less-than-expected 17.1% last month from the year-ago period, while Beijing’s trade surplus totaled $14.51 billion, the smallest since May. Thursday’s slide should also be put in context, Hogan noted, as “we’re talking about a market that has had robust gains over the last five days. As early ago as last Tuesday, the sky was falling and everybody was comparing this to 2008. Six trading days later, and 100 points gets us all the way to 11,400,” he said of Thursday’s drop on the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Stocks edged off their session lows after Slovakia’s parliament voted to approve an expanded Europe bailout fund. Slovakia is the last of 17 nations needed to give the green light to a more-powerful European Financial Stability Facility. For every stock rising, more than two fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 487 million shares traded hands as of 2:20 p.m. Eastern. Leading Dow decliners, J.P. Morgan Chase shares dropped 5.7% after the bank reported net income fell in the third quarter, depressed by lower investment-bank fees. Read more in Financial Stocks. J.P. Morgan will be followed by reports next week from Citigroup Inc., Bank of America Corp. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. “This is a very important quarter for earnings, as it will cause many bearish economists to upgrade forecasts for 2011 expectations,” said Marc Pado, U.S. market strategist at Cantor Fitzgerald. “If we do not start seeing support for a recession in 2012, market valuations based on forward-looking earnings would support a move back to 1,350 by year-end.” U.S. economic data had the government’s count of Americans filing claims for jobless benefits last week declining by 1,000 to 404,000 and the U.S. trade deficit little changed at $45.6 billion in August.
