Post No. 2,670 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 5/30/14 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 5/30/14.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Investor's Business Daily; the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall Street Journal & Financial Times; & Saturday's New York Times, & Atlanta Journal & Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 16717.17 up 18.43 or 0.11% from Thursday's close of 16698.74. For the year the Dow is up 0.85%. Of the Dow components 22 gained and 8 declined. For the week the Dow is up 1.2% and for the month up 2.1%. The biggest gainer dollar-wise Walmart up 79 cents and percentage-wise was Microsoft up 1.49%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar down $1.37 or 1.32%.
WSJ pB4 "S&P 500 rises 4th month in row to record" by Matt Jarzemsky, Min Zeng says US stocks edged mostly higher with the S&P 500 riding its 4th consecutive monthly advance to a fresh record as did the Dow.
Sat. NYT pB5 "late rally sends Dow to new high, barely" by AP says the stock market closed May on a mostly higher note on Fri, sending the S&P & Dow to nominal highs.
IBD pB8 "Stock uptrend stays intact: can summer rally follow?" by Paul Whitfield says stocks trotted to a mixed finish Fri as the new uptrend cont'd to avoid hard shots. Friday's action was mixed in rising vol while the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B5 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.35 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.33 (last year it was 16.51). Monday's P/E estimate is 14.41 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 14.81 (year ago it was 14.05) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.22 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.18 (last year it was 2.35). The Dow's all-time high was 16,717.17 on May 30, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2603.13 up 2.87 from Thursday's numerator of 2600.26. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.77 up 9 cents from Thursday's average closing price of $86.68. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.61 (HD/PG) up 46 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $80.15 (PG/HD). The lowest volume was Visa and the highest volume was Intel.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $287 ($260,313 - $260,026).
5/30/14 Friday 4:06 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the U.S. stock market finished May with the biggest monthly gain since February as the main benchmarks ended the week higher. Friday's trading on Wall Street was lackluster as investors were cautious after disappointing reports on personal income, spending and consumer sentiment. Marginal gains on the S&P 500 helped the benchmark close at a record level for the 14th time this year. The large-cap index SPX +0.18% closed 3.44 points, or 0.2%, higher at 1,923.48. The measure added 1.2% over the past week and is 2.1% higher over the past month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.11% closed at a record level, adding 18.37 points, or 0.1%, to 16,717.11. The blue-chip index gained 0.7% over the week and rose 0.8% over the month. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.13% ended the day down 5.33 points, or 0.1%, at 4,242.62, but it still recorded a 1.4% over the past week. A 3.1% gain over the past month was the first monthly advance in 3 months.
