The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Thursday at 16698.74 up 65.56 or 0.39% from Wednesday's close of 16633.05. Of the Dow components 25  gained and  5 declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Merck up $1.30 and 2.3%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs down 45 cents and percentage-wise was  Cisco down 0.56%.



As of the open of  the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.27 down from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.31 (last year it was 16.71).  Thursday's P/E estimate is 14.81 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 14.81 (year ago it was 13.75) and Thursday's dividend yield is 2.19 up from Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.18 (last year it was 2.37). The Dow's all-time high was 16,715.44 on May 13,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2600.26 up 10.21  from  Wednesday's   numerator of 2590.05.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.68 up 34 cents from Wednesday's  average closing price of $86.34.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.15   (PG/HD) up 26 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $79.89 (PG/HD). The lowest volume was  Visa and the highest volume was Pfizer.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,021  ($260,026 - $259,005).

5/29/14 Thursday 4:05    pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the U.S. stock market closed modestly higher on Thursday with the S&P 500 hitting an intraday record and finishing at an all-time high for the 13th time this year. Investors shrugged off data showing the economy contracted in the first quarter and focused instead on better-than-expected jobless claims and deal news in the food industry. The benchmark S&P 500 SPX +0.54% closed 10.25 points, or 0.5%, higher at 1,920.03. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.39% added 65.50 points, or 0.4%, to 16,698.68. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.54% ended the day up 22.87 points, or 0.5%, at 4,247.95.

A  read of the print editions of  Thursday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times,  Investor's  Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Wednesday at 16633.05 down 42.32 or 0.25% from Tuesday's close of 16675.50. For the year the Dow is up 0.34%. Of the Dow components 10  gained, Pfizer was unchanged and 19  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  was DuPont up 25 cents and percentage-wise was Intel up 0.64%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $1.70 and percentage-wise was  McDonald's down 1.03%.

WSJ pC4 "After run up stocks dip back into the red" by Alexandra Scaggs says stocks pulled back after 2 straight climbs to records for the S&P.

IBD pB2 "Leaders resist small drop; market internals improve" by David Saito-Chung says stocks caught their breath wed, a day after the Nasdaq posted a follow through to end a relatively mild correction.  Wed's action saw modest declines in mixed vol & the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

FT p21 "Wall street" by Eric Platt says markets drifted ahead of key economic reports today which include a 2nd reading of 1Q GDP as well as pending home sales & initial jobless claims.

AJC pA9 "Small retreat as bonds rally" by AP & same story at NYT pB7 "Treasury debt forges higher as equities fade"  says the S&P's fell back from record levels on Wed as the bond market cont'd to rally.


Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2590.05 6.59 down  from  Tuesday's   numerator of 2596.64.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. 5/28/14 Wednesday 4:26   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says   the U.S. stock market ended Wednesday’s choppy session slightly lower, with the main benchmarks ending their four-day winning streak. The S&P 500 retreated from record levels but still closed above 1,900.
Analysts attributed small losses to investors taking a breather after four consecutive days of gains.

The S&P 500 SPX -0.11%  traded in positive territory for the most of the session but gave up incremental gains and closed 2.13 points, or 0.1%, lower at 1,909.76.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.25%  lost 42.32 points, or 0.3%, to 16,633.05.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.28%  dipped in and out of negative territory and ended the day down 11.99 points, or 0.3%, at 4,225.07.                                         
“There were a few disappointing earnings, [a new] deal ... between Valeant and Allergan fell through. So, markets are taking a pause,” said Kim Caughey Forrest, investment analyst at Fort Pitt Capital. “Still, the bias in the stock market this year is upward. It seems like people are buying every dip, which are turning out to be very shallow.”
In corporate news, Michael Kors Holdings Ltd. KORS -0.14%  shares swung between big gains and losses and closed 1.3% higher, after the luxury retailer’s fiscal fourth-quarter profit topped estimates.                                        
PetroLogistics L.P. PDH +10.67%  shares surged 11% on the news that a subsidiary of Koch Industries Inc. agreed to buy the company, which produces propylene, in a deal worth about $2.1 billion in cash, including debt. Toll Brothers Inc. TOL +0.52%  shares rose 2.1% after the home builder reported better-than-expected fiscal second-quarter results.                                          
Shares of Workday Inc. WDAY -0.31%  rose 2.3% after the enterprise cloud-application company late Tuesday reported a smaller-than-expected adjusted loss. Total revenue rose to $159.7 million from $91.65 million, beating estimates.
DSW Inc.DSW +0.17%  shares slumped 27% after the discount shoe retailer cut its forecast for full-year results. DSW also posted first-quarter results that fell short of analyst estimates.
Shares of 3D Systems Corp. DDD -0.87%  fell 11% after the 3-D printer late Tuesday announced a secondary offering of approximately 6 million shares.
Twitter Inc. TWTR +0.03%  shares climbed 11% after Nomura upgraded the stock to buy from neutral,. It said investors have fully priced in the expectation that the short-messaging, social-media company will remain a niche player. 
In other financial markets, European stocks XX:SXXP -0.05%  posted marginal losses, while Asian stocks closed mostly higher on the back of Wall Street gains.
U.S. Treasury prices surged Wednesday, sending the benchmark 10-year Treasury note 10_YEAR -2.86%   yield to its lowest of the year on a closing basis.
Across other markets, oil CLN4 -1.09%  and gold GCM4 -0.52%   prices settled lower, and the dollar DXY +0.25%  pushed higher.
