5/9/14 Fri. am McDonald's US Sales Flat

Post No. 2,663 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Friday's  Wall St. Journal,    Financial Times, Investor's  Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. -carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Thursday at 16550.97 up 32.43 or 0.20% from Wednesday's close of 16518.54. For the year the Dow is down 0.16%. Of the Dow components  18  gained and  12  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Visa up $2.20 and percentage-wise was AT&T up 1.79%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Chevron and percentage-wise was  Merck down 1.81%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks end mixed in choppy trading" by Chris Dieterich says the Dow edged higher in choppy trading as investors cont'd to gravitate toward defensive plays in larger companies.

AJC pA15 "Utility, energy stocks retreat" by AP says the market ended mostly lower Thurs due to the latest round of firm earnings.

As of the open    the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.21 up from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.20 (last year it was 16.55).  Friday's P/E estimate is 14.81 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 14.81 (year ago it was 13.25) and Friday's dividend yield is 2.26 up from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.16   (last year it was 2.44). The Dow's all-time high was 16,580.84 on April 30,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2577.25 up 5.05 from  Wednesday's closing numerator of 2572.20.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.91 up 17 cents  from Wednesday's average closing price of $85.74.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.93   (WMT/DIS) up 80 cents from Wednesday's closing median price of $79.13 (WMT/DIS). The lowest volume was   Travelers and the highest volume was aT&T.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $505  ($257,725 - $257,220).

5/8/14 Thursday 4:07   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the U.S. stock market ended a volatile session on Thursday with modest losses, driven by renewed selloffs in previously high-flying names. At session highs, the Dow Jones Industrial Average topped its previous record close level, but failed to break through it, while the S&P 500 turned back after getting within a hair's breadth to its closing record. Still, the declines were not uniform, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average managed to stay in positive territory by the end of the session. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.40% shed 16.18 points, or 0.4%, to 4,051.50, losing 2.1% over the past three sessions. The S&P 500 SPX -0.14% ended the day down 2.58 points, or 0.1%, at 1,875.63. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.20% closed 32.43 points, or 0.2%, higher at 16,550.97.
