5/6/14 Tues. am Pfizer's 1Q Profits Dip 15% but Beat Views

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,657 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Tuesday's  Wall St. Journal,    Financial Times, Investor's  Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. -carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Monday at 16530.55 up 17.66 or 0.11% from Friday's close of 16512.89.  For the year the Dow is down 0.92%. Of the Dow components 17   gained and  13  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  was Visa up $2.53 and percentage-wise was Boeing up 1.55%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs down $2.53 and percentage-wise was JPMorgan down 2.45 %.

As of the open    the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.12 up from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.11 (last year it was 16.38).  Tuesday's P/E estimate is 14.81 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 14.81 (year ago it was 13.25) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.41 up from Monday's dividend yield of 2.16   (last year it was 2.39). The Dow's all-time high was 16,580.84 on April 30,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks edge higher as tech leads the way" by Dan Strumpf says US stocks recovered from a morning slide to end higher due to disappointing news from Pfizer and JPMorgan and a mixed bag of economic data from China and the US.

NYT pB8 "Shares advance only narrowly after concerns from abroad"  & AJC pA9 "Indexes reverse early losses" by AP says the stock market closed slightly higher due to improving US service sector and less concern re: China.

IBD pB2 "Stocks end well off lows, but turnover disappoints" by Ken shreve says MOnday's action saw positive reversal in lower vol due to weak manufacturing data in China and Ukraine clashes.  the current outlook is market is in correction.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2574.07 up 2.75 from  Friday's closing numerator of 2571.32.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.80 up 9 cents  from Friday's average closing price of $85.71.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.96   (HD/DIS) up 11 cents from Friday's closing median price of $79.85 (HD/DIS). The lowest volume was   IBM and the highest volume was Pfizer.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $275  ($257,407 - $257,132).

5/5/14 Monday 4:06   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks closed higher on Monday, as investors shrugged off earlier worries over the slowing economy in China and deteriorating situation in Ukraine. Better-than-expected data on the U.S. services sector aided markets. The S&P 500 SPX +0.19% ended the day 3.51 points, or 0.2%, higher at 1,884.65, trading near record levels. Utilities and health-care sector stocks led the gains. The Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA +0.11% turned a more-than 100-point-loss to a gain of 17.66 points, or 0.1% to 16,530.55. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.34% finished the day 14.16 points, or 0.3%, higher at 4,138.06.
