5/26/14 Mon Boeing Buys Software Maker

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,671 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Monday's Barron's, Tuesday's  Investor's  Business Daily; Monday's  New York Times & Atlanta Journal & Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Friday at 16606.27 up 63.19 or 0.38% from Thursday's close of 16543.08. For the year the Dow is up 0.2%.  Of the Dow components  20  gained, Coke and GE were unchanged  and 8  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  was Visa up $2.70 and percentage-wise was Nike up 1.3%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was McDonald's down 45 cents   and percentage-wise was  Pfizer down 0.57%.

IBD pB8 "Indexes cap solid week with gains in soft trade" by Ken Shreve says major averages extended their wining streaks to 3 sessions Friday, but signs of institutional buying in the major averages remain few and far between.  Friday's action saw new closing high for S&P 500 in light preholiday trade.  the current outlook is the market is in a correction.

As of the open   the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of  Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.24 (last year it was 16.71).  Tuesday's P/E estimate is 14.81 (year ago it was 13.75) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.21  (last year it was 2.40). The Dow's all-time high was 16,715.44 on May 13,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average opening numerator is 2585.86 up 9.84 from  Friday's opening   numerator of 2576.02.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.20 up 33 cents from Thursday's  average closing price of $85.87.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.85  (HD/PG). The lowest volume was  3M and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $984  ($258,586 - $257,602 ).

5/23/14 Friday 4:04   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says after three straight days of advances, the U.S. stock market finished the week with solid gains, sending the S&P 500 above the 1,900 level, a first on a closing basis. Friday’s gains sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average into positive territory for the year, alongside the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite. Investors welcomed better-than-expected new-home sales numbers. The benchmark S&P 500 closed 8.04 points, or 0.4%, higher at 1,900.53 and gained 1.2% over the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 63.19 points, or 0.4%, to 16,606.27 and finished the week 0.7% higher. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day up 31.47 points, or 0.8%, at 4,185.81, clocking in a 2.3% gain over the past five days. The Russell 2000 index rallied, gaining 12 points, or 1.1% to 1,126.18, according to preliminary data from FactSet. The small-cap index gained 2.1% over the week and moved above its 200-day moving average.
