5/30/14 Fri. am Boeing's Provides Flat Guidance

Post No. 2,678 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Friday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times,  Investor's  Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Thursday at 16698.74 up 65.56 or 0.39% from Wednesday's close of 16633.05. For the year the Dow is up 0.7%.  Of the Dow components 25  gained and  5 declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Merck up $1.30 and 2.3%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs down 45 cents and percentage-wise was  Cisco down 0.56%.

WSJ pC4 "GDP reversal doesn't halt stocks' climb" by Chris Dieterich says investors brushed off a weak reading on economic growth & pushed the S&P to a record high.

NYT pB7 "Wall street moves higher as Tyson joins bidding for Hillshire" & AJC pA13 "Food fight, labor news a plus" by AP says stocks rose modestly Thurs, sending the S&P to a new high.

IBD pB2 "Stock indexes peg gains, protect budding uptrend" by Paul Whitfield says stocks traded in a tight range Thurs protecting the new uptrend from trouble.  Thurs's action saw up in declining vol while the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of  the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.33 up from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.27 (last year it was 16.73).  Friday's P/E estimate is 14.81 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 14.81 (year ago it was 13.75) and Friday's dividend yield is 2.18 down from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.19 (last year it was 2.35). The Dow's all-time high was 16,715.44 on May 13,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2600.26 up 10.21  from  Wednesday's   numerator of 2590.05.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.68 up 34 cents from Wednesday's  average closing price of $86.34.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.15   (PG/HD) up 26 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $79.89 (PG/HD). The lowest volume was  Visa and the highest volume was Pfizer.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,021  ($260,026 - $259,005).

5/29/14 Thursday 4:05    pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the U.S. stock market closed modestly higher on Thursday with the S&P 500 hitting an intraday record and finishing at an all-time high for the 13th time this year. Investors shrugged off data showing the economy contracted in the first quarter and focused instead on better-than-expected jobless claims and deal news in the food industry. The benchmark S&P 500 SPX +0.54% closed 10.25 points, or 0.5%, higher at 1,920.03. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.39% added 65.50 points, or 0.4%, to 16,698.68. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.54% ended the day up 22.87 points, or 0.5%, at 4,247.95.
