5/5/14 Mon. am Pfizer Reports Results Today

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,655 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Monday's Barron's, Investor's  Business Daily, Wall St. Journal,    Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. -carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Friday at 16512.89 down 45.98 or 0.28% from Thursday's close of 16558.87.   For the year the Dow is down 0.4%.  Of the Dow components 12   gained and  18  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was  Boeing up $1.48 & 1.15%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $2.09 and percentage-wise was Merck down 2.35%.

As of the open    the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of  Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.11 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.16 (last year it was 16.41).  Monday's P/E estimate is 14.81 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 14.70 (year ago it was 13.25) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.16 unchanged from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.16   (last year it was 2.39). The Dow's all-time high was 16,580.84 on April 30,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2571.32 down  7.16 from  Thursday's closing numerator of 2578.48.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.71 down 14 cents  from Thursday's average closing price of $85.95.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.85   (HD/DIS) up 22 cents from Thursday's closing median price of $79.63 (DIS/WMT). The lowest volume was   Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $716  ($257,848 - $257,132).

5/2/14 Friday 4:41   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks closed slightly lower on Friday, capping weekly gains, as concerns over conflict in Ukraine outweighed an upbeat jobs report.
A surprisingly stronger-than-expected jobs report lifted both the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average to record levels, but rally proved to be short-lived.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.28%  lost 45.98 points, or 0.3% to 16,512.89, but still recorded a gain of 0.9% over the past week.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.09%  finished the day 3.55 points, or 0.1%, lower at 4,123.90 and gained 1.2% over the week.

“The headline number was much better than expected, confirming that a harsh winter slowed the economy down. But in the end, the solid gains in jobs growth did not matter, as an improvement was already priced in,” said Kate Warne, investment strategist at Edward Jones.
The U.S. generated 288,000 jobs in April--the biggest increase in more than two years--and the unemployment rate fell to 6.3%, a strong performance that suggests the economy is accelerating after tepid first-quarter growth. The unemployment rate is the lowest since September 2008. However, the details of the report puzzled investors. The labor participation rate dropped sharply, while wage growth was flat, suggesting a bigger slack in the labor market.
Talking about market reaction in the afternoon, Anthony Valeri, investment strategist for LPL Financial, said traders wouldn't want to hold on to long positions going into the weekend after disturbing headlines of violence in Ukraine between pro-Ukrainian and pro-Russian factions.
On the corporate side, shares of LinkedIn Corp. LNKD -8.37%  dropped 8.4% after the online networking service said late Thursday it swung to a loss of $13.32 million.
Ares Management ARES -2.11% slid 2.1% to $18.60 on its first day of trading. The alternative lender priced its initial public offering of 11.4 million shares at $19 a common share. Ares plans to use the proceeds of the IPO to buy newly issued Ares Operating Group Units, to repay debt and to finance growth projects, it said.
Merck & Co. Inc.MRK -2.35%  slipped 2.4% after reports German drug maker Bayer AG DE:BAYN +0.08%  is in exclusive talks to buy Merck’s consumer-health care unit for $14 billion.
Wynn Resorts Ltd.                         WYNN +7.28%  shares rose 7.3%. after the company said late Thursday its first-quarter adjusted earnings rose to $2.32 a share, above analyst expectations.
