Fri. 5/2/14 am AT&T May Acquire Dish or DirecTV

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,653 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal,   Financial Times,   Investor's  Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Thursday at 16558.87 down 21.97 or 0.13%  from Wednesday's close of 16580.84.   For the year the Dow is down 0.11%.  Of the Dow components 7   gained and  23  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Visa up $3.48 and percentage-wise was  Merck up 1.81%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was IBM down $2.94 or 1.5%.

WSJ pC4 "Blue Chips retreat from record run" by Chirs Dieterich says the Dow pulled back a day after closing at a record in a relatively quiet session ahead of Fri's employment report.  DirectTV is charted under Good News saying AT&T approached it about a possible acquisition.

FT p19 "Wall street" by eric Platt says US equity markets inched higher ahead of today's non-farm payrolls report, which will shed light on hiring trends after a brutal winter.

NYT pB9 "Three day rally ends, despite positive news" & AJC pA13 "Small losses for Dow, S&P" by AP says stocks edged lower Thurs due to the latest round of company earnings, a survey on manufacturing and news on the job market.  Dish rose on news that they may merge with AT&T.

IBD pB2 "Nasdaq stalls, but leaders show some signs of life" by Paul Whitfield says stocks kept to a right range Thurs with the indexes unable to make much progress. Income stocks and blue chips are the issues stirring.  Recent breakouts include Procter & gamble, 3M, Exxon and Walmart.  Thursday's action was flat to up in mixed trade.  The current outlook is market in correction.  Caterpillar recently hit a new high but have yet to re establish fast growth in rev or earnings.

As of the open    the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.16 down from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.17 (last year it was 16.26).  Friday's P/E estimate is 14.70  unchanged from Friday's P/E estimate of 14.70 (year ago it was 13.15) and Friday's dividend yield is 2.16 up from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.15   (last year it was 2.41). The Dow's all-time high was 16,580.84 on April 30,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2578.48 down  3.42 from  Wednesday's closing numerator of 2581.90.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.95 down 11 cents  from Wednesday's average closing price of $86.06.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.63   (DIS/WMT). The lowest volume was   Nike and the highest volume was Pfizer.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $342  ($258,190 -$257,848).

5/1/14 Thursday 4:32   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the U.S. stock market ended Thursday’s choppy trade generally lower as traders stuck to the sidelines ahead of the key jobs report due Friday morning.
The benchmark S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average broke their three-day run as investors assessed a slew of mixed economic reports and earnings results. The Nasdaq Composite defied the trend and closed higher for the third straight day.
Consumer spending and ISM reports were better than expected, while jobless claims and construction spending missed forecasts.
The S&P 500 SPX -0.01%  ended the day less than a point lower at 1,883.68. The Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA -0.13%  lost 21.97 points, or 0.1%, to 16,558.87, retreating from the record closing level reached on Wednesday. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.31%  added 12.9 points, or 0.3% to 4,127.45.
Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at ConvergEx Group, a global brokerage company based in New York, described the markets as ‘faith-based’.
“Markets are mirroring the economy and investors are putting a lot of faith in big improvements in the second half,” Colas said.           A hint of “spring snapback” was present in consumer spending data. Spending by American households accelerated in March, rising by the most since August 2009, the Commerce Department reported Thursday.
U.S. manufacturing companies expanded in April at the fastest pace since the end of last year, a survey from the Institute for Supply Management showed.
The number of people filing for state unemployment benefits rose for the second straight week, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Still, some economists dismissed it as seasonality.
“This report screams ‘Easter seasonal adjustments,’ so we are inclined to ignore it. What matters is where claims settle over the next few weeks, as the Easter hit fades,” wrote Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.
Outlays for U.S. construction projects rose 0.2% in March to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $942.5 billion, led by private residential projects, the U.S. Commerce Department reported Thursday.
The jobs report, the most important measure of the U.S. economy, is scheduled to be released at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on Friday.
