The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Tuesday at 16374.31 down 137.55 or 0.83% from Monday's close of 16511.86. Of the Dow components 26   gained, Intel was unchanged and   3declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Home Depot up $1.46 or 1.91%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was  Caterpillar down $3.83 or 3.63%.


As of the open   the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.18 up from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.16 (last year it was 16.73).  Tuesday's P/E estimate is 14.70 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 14.70 (year ago it was 13.72) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.19 unchanged from Monday's dividend yield of 2.19   (last year it was 2.33). The Dow's all-time high was 16,715.44 on May 13,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2549.74 down 21.32 from  Monday's closing numerator of 2571.16.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $84.99 down 72 cents  from Monday's average closing price of $85.71.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.10  (HD/PG) up 53 cents from Monday's median closing price of $78.57 (PG/WMT). The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,132  ($257,116 - $254,974).

5/20/14 Tuesday 4:04   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks ended Tuesday with losses as disappointing earnings from TJX Companies, IncTJX -7.62% , Staples, Inc SPLS -0.02% and Caterpillar Inc. CAT -0.21% weighed on investor sentiment. Selling intensified in the afternoon after comments from Philadelphia Fed president Charles Plosser, who said that Fed may need to act sooner rather than later should the economy accelerate. The benchmark S&P 500 me SPX -0.65% closed 12.24 points, or 0.7%, lower at 1,872.84. Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA -0.83% shed 137.55 points, or 0.8%, to 16,374.31. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.70% ended the day down 28.92 points, or 0.7%, at 4,096.89. Preliminary data from FactSet shows the Russell 2000 index RUT -1.48% down 14.38 points, or 1.3% lower at 1,100.02.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Monday at 16511.86 up 20.55 or 0.12% from Friday's close of 16491.31.  For the year the Dow is down 0.39%. Of the Dow components 18   gained and 12  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs up $1.24 and percentage-wise was JPMorgan up 0.98%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was McDonald's down $1.05 and percentage-wise was  Home Depot down 1.11 %.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks extend gains as tech shares recover" by Dan Strumpf says US stocks gained for a 2nd straight day as tech stocks and shares of small firms recovered from recent losses.  US listed shares of AstraZeneca fell 12% after it rejected an increased bid from Pfizer and DirecTV fell 1.8% after agreeing to be bought by AT&T for $49 bil.

NYT pB7 "Internet and biotech shares give the market a modest boost" by Reuters says the stock market rose moderately Mon, with a rally in high growth names among Internet & biotech shares lifting the Nasdaq by almost 1%.

IBD pB2 "More progress for stocks, but up volume still light" by Vincent Mao says stocks shook for morning weakness and finished higher for a second straight session as Monday's action was up in lower trade and the current outlook is the market is in correction.

FT p21 "Wall street" by Eric Platt says US equity markets coasted at the start of the week without any significant economic reports to sway investors.  Pfizer shares rose 1%.

AJC pA9 "Major indexes finish higher" by AP says the market drifted to a higher finish on Mon with no major economic data.  Investors focused on news on corp. deals including AT&T's proposed takeover of DirecTV.


Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2571.16 up 3.20 from  Friday's closing numerator of 2567.96.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $320 ($257,116 - $256,796).

5/19/14 Monday 4:39   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks ended Monday’s thinly traded session higher with small-cap and tech companies leading the gains. Trading volumes on Wall Street were the third-lowest this year, and analysts noted the absence of ‘bad news’ sent stocks higher.                                       
Gains were muted in light of mixed deal news. AT&T agreed to buy DirecTV, but AstraZeneca rejected Pfizer Inc.’s final bid. 
The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.86%  closed 35.23 points, or 0.9%, higher at 4,125.82. The biggest component on the index Apple Inc, gained 1.2% to $604.59. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.38%  added 7.22 points, or 0.4%, to 1,885.08. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.13%  rose 20.55 points, or 0.1%, to 16,511.86.                                        
The Russell 2000 /RUT +1.05%   index of small stocks added 11.52 points, or 1%, to 1,114.43.                                       
“There is a news vacuum today, so markets are edging higher as there is nothing to hold them back,” says Channing Smith, managing director at Capital Advisors.
“Traders will be watching key technical levels at this point and the 10-year Treasury yields. If the 10-year note yields fall below the 2.46% level, then we might see weakness in equities.” he added.
In the absence of economic news, investors turned their attention to two Fed speakers on Monday.
Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco President John Williams said it will likely be more than a year before the central bank begins raising interest rates. Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher lamented the performance of Congress, which he said was acting like a brake on growth that the Fed cannot overcome with its aggressive stimulus policies.                                        
In corporate news, Urban Outfitters, Inc.URBN -3.51%   shares fell 4% in extended-hours trading after the retailer narrowly missed estimates for its first-quarter earnings.
Campbell Soup CPB -2.35%  shares stumbled 2.4% as weak soup sales led to the company cutting its full-year forecast. Shares of AT&T /T -0.03%  fell 1% after the telecom giant agreed to buy satellite-television provider DirecTV DTV +0.01%  in a stock-and-cash deal worth $67.1 billion, including debt. DirecTV shares also fell 1.8%.                                        
Google Inc.’s GOOG +1.58%   YouTube unit has reached a deal to buy Twitch, a privately held video-streaming service for gamers, for more than $1 billion, according to a report Sunday in Variety, which cited “sources familiar with the pact.” Shares in Google rose 1.6%.
Apple Inc. AAPL +0.00%   shares rose 1.2% to $604.59 as Apple and Google agreed to dismiss all outstanding patent disputes although there is no cross-licensing agreement as part of the deal.

U.S.-listed shares of AstraZeneca AZN +0.37%  dropped 12% after the drug maker again rebuffed Pfizer’s “final” offer of £55 a share ($89.96) saying it undervalues the company. The offer values AstraZeneca at about $120 billion, while the previous offer of £50-a-share put the deal at about $106 billion. Pfizer PFE +0.83%   shares were up 0.6%.
Asian shares fell, with Shanghai stocks hit following a report that China’s property prices are showing further signs of a slowdown amid government curbs. In Europe, the Stoxx Europe 600 XX:SXXP -0.14%  closed lower.
Among commodities, gold futures pared earlier gains GCM4 -0.02%  and fell back below the $1,300-an-ounce level. Crude oil futuresCLM4 +0.59%   extended their gains from last week. The dollar was stuck in tight ranges against major rivals on Monday as investors struggled to get a better sense of how the Fed views the current pace of economic growth.
