5/10/14 Sat. Cisco & Walmart Will Report Results This Week

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,665 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Monday's  Barron's &  Investor's  Business Daily; the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall St. Journal &    Financial Times; & Saturday's New York Times &  Atlanta Journal & Constitution  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Friday at 16583.34 up 32.27 or 0.20% from Thursday's close of 16550.97. For the week the Dow was up 0.43%. For the year the Dow is up 0.40 %.  Of the Dow components 18   gained and 12  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $1.17 and percentage-wise was McDonald's up 0.96%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Exxon down 37 cents  and percentage-wise was  JPMorgan down 0.64%.

WSJ pB5 "Dow edges up to a record" by Matt Jarzemsky, Josie Cox says the Dow notched a fresh record in a quiet session as shares of smaller firms bounced up from a 3 month low.

NYT pB7 "Dow zigzags most of the day, but ends higher"  &AJC pA12 "Dow ekes out a record close" by AP says the Dow eked out a record on Friday after a choppy day of trading during which investors couldn't make up their minds.

FT p13 "Wall street" by Eric Platt  says US equities edged lower Friday as a choppy week of trading moved to a close.

IBD pB8 "Stocks end on high note, but volume turns south" by Paul Whitfield says stocks finished high in the day's range Friday as the indexes held above key support lines.  Friday's action was up in lower volume and the current outlook is the market is in correction.  The Dow was boosted by weekly gains of 3% and 2% in Visa and American Express respectively.  Next week Walmart will report among other retailers.

As of the open    the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B4 of  Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.24 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.21 (last year it was 16.53).  Monday's P/E estimate is 14.73 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 14.81 (year ago it was 13.55) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.17 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.26   (last year it was 2.41). The Dow's all-time high was 16,583.34 on May 9,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2582.29 up 5.04 from  Thursday's closing numerator of 2577.25.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.08 up 15 cents  from Thursday's average closing price of $85.91.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.58   (WMT/DIS) up 65 cents from Thursday's closing median price of $79.93 (WMT/DIS). The lowest volume was Travelers   and the highest volume was Microsoft .

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $504  ($258,229 - $257,725).

5/9/14 Friday 4:07   pm MarketWatch by William L. Watts says U.S. stocks ended a choppy session with small gains Friday as the Dow Jones Industrial Average pushed to a record close. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq still posted its biggest weekly drop in four weeks after investors dumped technology and small-cap shares. The Dow industrials /quotes/zigman/627449/realtime DJIA +0.20% rose 32.37 points, or 0.2%, to close at 16,583.34, eclipsing the previous record of 16,580.84 set on April 30. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.50% gained 20.37 points, or 0.5%, to 4,071.87, trimming its weekly loss to 1.3%.
