5/7/14 Wed. am Merck Sells OTC Biz to Bayuer for $14.2 Bil; Disney's Results Beat Views due to Thor & Frozen

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,659 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Wednesday's  Wall St. Journal,    Financial Times, Investor's  Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. -carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Tuesday at 16401.02 down 129.53 or 0.78% from Monday's close of 16530.55. For the year the Dow is down 1.06%. Of the Dow components  4  gained and 26   declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Verizon up 8 cents or 0.17%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was  Goldman Sachs down $1.81 and percentage-wise was Merck down 2.59 %.

WSJ pC4 "Growth stocks sink the ind3xes" by Tomi Kilgore says US stocks closed broadly lower with declines concentrated in smaller high growth & consumer Internet stocks.

NYT pB6 "Weak earnings reports set off a braod decline" & AJC pA17 "Indexes suffer broad retreat" by AP say the stock market closed broadly lower Tues due to corp earnings reports & a plunge in Twitter.

IBD pB4 "Stocks dive as trade rises; financials, techs rattled" by Vincent Mao says stocks stumbled Wed in higher volume as the current outlook is market is in correction.

FT p21 "Wall street" by Richard Blackden says US equities overall edged lower led by losses in fin'l stocks while the tech sector was weighed by a sell off in twitter shares.  AT&T did not mention its possible takeover of direcTV in its 1Q results in which profits fell to $561 mil or $1.09 a share from $690 mil or4 $1.21 a share a year ago. Rev climbed 4% to $7.86bn.

As of the open    the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.08 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.12 (last year it was 16.47).  Wednesday's P/E estimate is 14.81 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 14.81 (year ago it was 13.25) and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.18 down from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.41   (last year it was 2.38). The Dow's all-time high was 16,580.84 on April 30,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2553.90 down 20.17 from  Monday's closing numerator of 2574.07.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.13 down 67 cents  from Monday's average closing price of $85.80.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.52   (WMT/DIS) down 44 cents from Monday's closing median price of $79.96 (HD/DIS). The lowest volume was   United Technologies and the highest volume was Pfizer.

If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,017  ($257,407 - $255,390).

5/6/14 Tuesday 4:37   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks stocks sold off on Tuesday as the dumping of momentum plays, such as Twitter Inc. and economically sensitive stocks, including some bank stocks, spreads to broader markets. Financials and consumer discretionary stocks were hardest hit on the S&P 500.
Even deal news, generally a positive for the market, failed to lift prices. The calendar also didn’t provide its usual support; Tuesdays on the whole have been the strongest part of the week this year.
The S&P 500 SPX -0.90%  ended the day at session lows, down 16.94 points, or 0.9%, at 1,867.72, with the financial and consumer-discretionary sectors leading the decline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.78%  dropped 129.53 or 0.8% to 16,401.02, with 27 of 30 members of the index closing in the red.
Joe Peta, managing director at Novus, a financial technology company, says the selloff on the Nasdaq Composite was prompted by two specific events: Expiration of the lock-up in Twitter Inc. shares and public denouncement of the Athenahealth stock by David Einhorn at the Ira Sohn investment conference.
“There is a clear rotation out of stocks that accumulated froth – namely biotech, Web 2.0 and social network companies. This earning season showed that investors care about profits and unprofitable companies were sold off to bring their PE ratios to more normal levels,” he added.
“Today’s trading is very atypical. There is very little volume, and deal news, which usually a positive for markets, is being ignored,” said Kim Caughey Forrest, senior equity analyst at Fort Pitt Capital.
The sole U.S. economic report covered the trade deficit, which narrowed in March to $40.4 billion, slightly above the consensus of $40 billion.
Whole Foods Market Inc. WFM -14.62%   shares slumped 10.3% in aftermarket action, after the grocer cuts outlook for sales and profits.
Groupon Inc GRPN -5.95%  shares fell 3.3% in extended trading hours on top of 2.5% losses on Tuesday after the company reported a wider loss than expected.
Shares in Walt Disney Company DIS +0.83%  rose 2.2% after quarterly results came above Wall Street’s expectations.
